This is the problem with our human condition, we think one extreme or the opposite extreme. Maybe it was neither of these extremes. In the first century there were Jews who believed in a works based salvation and at the same time those who believed we could live a lawless life and grace/forgiveness would overlook any and all offense. I believe you should edit this question.
