Translating the User Guide

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Several of the active Drupal translation groups have noticed that we now have a User Guide on Drupal.org... Today, I'd like to formally announce that the User Guide is open for translation!

The Catalan and Hungarian groups started their translations first, a couple of months ago, and those two groups helped us refine the translation process. We've all decided that the process is sufficiently refined now, and recently, we launched translation efforts for Simplified Chinese, Spanish, and Ukranian languages; French and Dutch are in the inquiry/planning stages as well. Ideally, we'd like to get the User Guide translated into all the languages that Drupal supports.

So, if your language group is interested in translating the User Guide, the first step is to make sure that Drupal 8.2's user interface is mostly or fully translated into your language, on https://localize.drupal.org. Then, within your localize.d.o translation group, you'll need to choose one or two project managers for the User Guide translation. At least one of them should be familiar with how to use Git to manage a drupal.org project, because that person will need to commit the translated files to the User Guide project.

Once those steps are done, you can follow the instructions on this page from the Contributor Guide:
https://www.drupal.org/docs/user_guide_guidelines/pm-guide.html#pm-guide...
to open a new issue, to launch the User Guide translation into your language. Make sure to note on the issue that:
(a) The Drupal Core user interface has been mostly translated in Drupal 8.2.x
(b) The localize.drupal.org group for your language has designated who should have Git access for this translation group

Once the initial issue is created, either Joe (eojthebrave) or I will set you up to start translating, and your group will be able to make individual issues for translating each of the about 100 topics in the User Guide (there's a script to help), plus an issue for the screenshots (most of them are luckily automated).

Once that is done, you'll be able to actually start translating. We have a guide for your individual topic translators to follow:
https://www.drupal.org/docs/user_guide_guidelines/practicalities.html#pr...
And there is a checklist for project managers to use, when they review and commit topic translations:
https://www.drupal.org/docs/user_guide_guidelines/phase-checklists.html#...

I hope to hear from more groups soon!
