How can we update the agents?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I was using the old version of this repo and have now switched to the plugins.

How do those plugins receive updates? Does Claude handle this automatically, or do we need to re-add the plugins and/or run a git pull?

@rafaelmotac @derekslenk Great question! After researching this, I can confirm that plugins do NOT automatically update when marketplace repositories change.

How Plugin Updates Actually Work

Claude Code stores plugins as git repositories in ~/.claude/plugins/marketplaces/, tracking the specific commit hash when installed. Updates require manual action:

1. Update the marketplace catalog:

   /plugin marketplace update marketplace-name
   

   This refreshes available plugin listings but doesn't update installed plugins.

2. Update installed plugins:

   /plugin uninstall plugin-name@marketplace-name
   /plugin install plugin-name@marketplace-name
   

Why the Confusion?

The documentation mentions "automatic version management" and marketplace updates, but this refers to:

• Refreshing marketplace catalogs (not installed plugins)
• Team auto-installation when trusting repos (not updates)
• Claude Code itself auto-updating (not plugins)

What You Should Do

• Periodically run /plugin marketplace update to refresh catalogs
• Check marketplace repos for changelogs/updates
• Manually reinstall plugins to get latest versions

The docs could definitely be clearer on this! You're right to question the update mechanism.

Not sure if it helps, but as a shortcut I made this simple bash script, which can be easily adapted.

update_plugins.sh

A cron job makes it run every night.
