This forced activation feature is really annoying.
Can't it be made optional?
Because the security of Github is not good enough, so, forcing feces into the user's mouth?

I honestly felt exactly the same way when they first forced 2FA on my account it felt like a massive disruption to my workflow and I spent an hour trying to find the "off" switch just like you.

Here is the approach I switched to that fixed the annoyance for me:
This is the most "proper" fix because it removes the need to type codes entirely. You can set up your computer’s fingerprint (TouchID), FaceID, or Windows Hello as your 2FA method.

1. Go to your GitHub Settings.
2. Click on Password and authentication in the left sidebar.
3. Look for the Passkeys section and click Add a passkey.
4. Now, when you log in, you just touch your fingerprint sensor or look at your camera. It takes one second and you never have to check your phone for a code again.
5. Result: Now, when I log in, I just touch the fingerprint sensor on my laptop. It takes half a second, and I never have to look at my phone or type a code again. It feels just like having no 2FA at all.

Other ways to reduce the 2FA "noise"

1. Use SSH for Git operations: If you are tired of 2FA in the terminal, set up an SSH key. Once configured, you can push and pull code without ever being asked for a password or 2FA code.
2. Browser "Remember Me": Ensure you are not using a browser that clears cookies on exit. If your browser "remembers" your device, GitHub will only ask for a 2FA code once every 30 days.
3. Authenticator Browser Extensions: If you don't like using your phone, use a 2FA extension like Bitwarden or Authenticator in your browser. It will auto-fill the code with one click
