Home dashboard update [Public preview feedback]

We made improvements to the content and layout of the home dashboard, designed to enable users to see, understand, and take action on their most important work in a single view. The default view of the home dashboard now displays short, customizable lists of recent agent tasks, pull requests, and issues. The feed view has moved to its own page at github.com/feed when the preview is enabled.

You can access the dashboard update by enabling New Dashboard Experience in Feature preview.

What's new

• A new agent module shows the status of all your agent tasks and provides links to the task session.
• Pull request and issue modules list your most recent pull requests and issues for quick navigation to your in-progress work. Each module has filtering options to customize the lists.
• The new Feed tab is the new home for the feed. It can also be found at github.com/feed. The feed's content and filters have not changed. When using the site on a mobile device, you can find a link to the feed in the hamburger navigation.
• We've applied fresh visual and UI updates to the dashboard.
• Action menus enable you to kick-off your work from any of the new modules. You can assign issues to Copilot coding agent or open pull requests and issues in Copilot Chat as references, with more shortcuts to come.

I like the new homepage, I missed when it was first removed! 😄

1. I think we should be able to sort the rows, I mean "Agent sessions", "Pull requests" and "Issues".
2. The repositories on the left is a duplicate of the repositories in the hamburger menu. I think the one in the hamburger menu should be removed.
3. Add extra / commands. I think it is missing a "spaces" slash which would use a specific space as a context.
   4. Add the ability to see the old feed somewhere. It is quite useful to track releases or new first issues of stared repositories for example. It is available in the top left corner. I am just blind! 🙈

Points 1 and 2 make sense and we've been considering them. I'd love to hear from other people on this as well.

1. Besides re-arranging the modules, are there other types of customization you're expecting?
2. How do you and others navigate to repos – is it primarily using the list on the dashboard, not in the hamburger menu?

On point 3, you can use the dropdown in the Copilot input to select a Space to reference

Thanks for checking it out! You can hide the Copilot input from github.com/settings/copilot.

The input's functionality has evolved a lot since it was first introduced on the dashboard. I'd encourage you to play around with it and see how it can help your workflow. I'm curious to hear from you or others what would make it more useful.

Thanks for the help @justinbyo . I was coming here to comment the same as @cloudglides , so it may be worth it to make the option to turn off the AI stuff on the Dashboard more discoverable. Perhaps you can have an option right there next to the chat to turn it off. I know MS is really try hard to push this AI nonsense everywhere, but I don't want it. It would be good to opt out of it globally. Or even better - make it opt-in

A few thoughts:

• I have a PR from 2016 which appears in the list (and the most recent activity dates from 2020), that's not exactly what I'd call recent. 😅
• The list items have excessively large paddings, I'd prefer a (much) more compact view.
• Sometimes the conversation continues in closed issues/PRs. It would be nice to continue showing them for some time after they're closed.
• I don't care about agent sessions, so I unchecked both the "open" and "closed" filters, but the list still shows and takes precious space on top of the page.
• An option to view the feed below the lists would be nice.

The PR from 2016 – that's weird. The pull request and issues lists are ordered by last updated. The item with the newest update will be at the top. So there may have been a recent update (maybe a comment, change in assignment, label?) If it's still not clear, let me know we can connect and figure out what's going on.

Also take a look at the filters, that might help you narrow down your results to your liking.

I mean, the previous "recent activity" feature (which showed in the left margin of the homepage, under "repositories") limited the view to issues/PRs which were active in the last 2 weeks. Then, they were removed.

Currently, I have 4 PRs open: 2 recent ones, and 2 very old ones. https://github.com/pulls shows the following:

Note the old PRs are both in the list. I left comments/reviews on the additional ones that are added in comparison to github.com/pulls. Only the top 2 are recent.

I know about the filters, but I definitely want the PRs I authored in the list. 🙂

Got it. I'm assuming that means issues or PRs that aren't really relevant to you but might still be open. Would you want to hide them permanently or until there's new activity?

Creating an issue from the home page feels ass backwards

There are a few different ways to create an issue from the dashboard. Are you talking about using the /create-issue command in the Copilot input?

There are some longstanding issues that I watch, but don't want to be at the top of my feed.

Got it. That issue is at the top because it was updated last week it looks like, and the issues are ordered by latest update. Would you want to do something like snooze or hide that issue?

Also, I notice you aren't assigned to that issue. If you turn off the "Involves me" filter and just use the "Assigned to me" filter that might work better for you.

Why does this appear on hover? Hover is terrible UX for touch inputs. Make it a menu or something always there. I don't want to accidentally click this.

Thanks for the reply! The menu looks good. Why not make this default for desktop too? Desktops have more space so I don't see a reason to hide it behind a hover action.

Also the copilot icon appearing in middle of two PRs might not be ideal.

Unfortunately, having this URL available is not enough. When I click on the GitHub logo here, I will still fall into the root domain, where I prefer to have the feed as a default open view.

@justinbyo can you please confirm that you understood @davecom's request for an option to select which home-view is the default? I imagine the 20 negative-reactions you've received are because you sound entirely-dismissive of this simple request.

The new dash-board seems extremely high-value for people working at big-corporations like you, who probably work on multiple organizations; projects; and issues concurrently or whose tasks change quickly. For others like me, my work-flow is pretty streamlined and doesn't use this site as ground-zero for mission-control; priorities; communication...

As-such the new dash-board's value is nearly-zero for me. I don't need a helper to keep-track of issues and PRs because when I do use those, I can easily manage them in my head or using the site's tools that have existed for so many years now.

OTOH the feed-view is very high-value for me because it allows me to stay up-dated with the tools and libraries I actively-use daily. A change-log with a new library-feature can change the way I approach a task that very-day or I may want to update my tool-chain with new-releases as soon as I'm aware of them for bug-fixes and security-updates.

Having the old-feed still-available is great for that reason and thank you for reassuring-us that it's still there but the extra-friction to get there is a significant UI and UX concern for those of us for-whom the new dash-board doesn't aggregate actionable-value.

Having the option to select a default-view for the home-page would be an objective improvement, especially for those like-me who doesn't have GH's home as their book-marked landing-page on the site, requiring multiple-steps now to get to the feed when it was just one-click away before.

Having the feed included as a section on the new dash-board, especially given the ability to rearrange the order in which sections are shown; or persistently collapsed and expanded sections would also be a great solution!

Echoing this request, I'm someone that doesn't do a lot with Issues and PRs so my "Home" shows one PR from 2017 and three issues that are not especially important to me. I have no Agent or AI/chat showing so the new Home is of really low value to me and mostly empty. Either integrate the Feed or make it an option to set as the default.

There's an option for the chat box, but it's completely buried in the settings: go to copilot features and disable the "Dashboard entry point" setting.

Sure this gets rid of copilot but it just turns your home screen into a full page view of PRs and issues... Whereas previously the home page was activity AND I had "Recent activity" of PRs and issues in the sidebar

TBH high key slaps, maybe we can get the feed back on the same page even if it's the last one, I like the way things are grouped it's cool but yeah I miss just seeing the feed without an extra click, I guess I can endure a scroll.
Or better still be able to rearrange the order...
And tbh about the Spark and the likes at the top, it's fine, especially for people that are new and don't even know it exists lol. But yeah I really love this well-done guys

Edit: I saw some others complain about the spark... stuff, tbh yeah it's a bit big and maybe it can dynamically change size depending on the users screen size cuz on smaller screens it takes too much space, and I am using a 15" laptop haha.
maybe even preset options like "default", "mid", "small" or just a floating button somewhere...

It was an unbelievably bad experience to change what users have gotten used to—with no clear reason other than the product design team’s KPI.

I spent several days checking the settings page, worried I might have accidentally disabled the previous feature. It turns out I wasted all that time.

I suggest:

• Add an option to bring the old feature back.

Reason:

1. Good experience checking the "news" in the feed, while keeping "recent activity" in the left bar. I simply don’t want to sacrifice any of them.
2. Right now the bottom of the left bar is left empty. Why not make use of it?

One of my pull request was closed with a message, I got an email but I don't want to answer on my phone.
I needed to get back to it to get the link. That's not useful.

If I could see all activities around objects that I own or have subscribed, it would be wonderful.

I agree with a lot of the feedback here (like having the Feed up front by default). But the main thing that bothers me about it is that on my iPad, the spacing is weird. I circled the section of blank space that appears only on one side. This persists on both Feed and Home views

And I've also added a picture of what the old feed looked like.

I really like the look and feel of the new dashboard! 😄
That said, I find it a bit annoying that I have to press an extra button to reach the feed now, and it seems like the repository button is gone, which were both things I used a lot on the old dashboard. Hope those can be made a bit quicker to access again!

It looks decent, but I personally find AI features on github to be borderline useless.

I don't think github will remove them completely no matter how many people ask since every site seems to have some sort of AI integration nowadays, but please keep an option to turn it off. That way, it's easier to get actual work done without having to navigate through the AI clutter.

PS: There can also be an option to let /feed be the default page that loads upon visiting https://github.com.
