Apple's upcoming camera-equipped AirPods are starting to make more sense. New code found in macOS Tahoe 26.7 suggests the cameras may track the display you're watching and dynamically position audio around it.

Camera-Equipped AirPods May Enhance Audio

According to findings shared by MacRumors forum member Mactracker, these onboard cameras will allow the earbuds to physically "see" and lock onto the exact display you are watching.

Apple's current audio products rely exclusively on internal motion sensors to estimate users' head position. The camera-equipped AirPods could identify the kind of device you're watching on and auto-customise their sound accordingly.

Therefore, even in an environment with several active displays, the cameras are designed to pinpoint the exact monitor that users' eyes are fixed on. This way, they can seamlessly anchor the audio to the source.

Finally, Face ID, which currently assists with spatial audio tracking, will help the camera-equipped AirPods to automatically prioritise the direct visual feed from the AirPods for superior accuracy.

All of this is expected to run quietly in the background and is expected to pause automatically whenever the wearer starts moving. Beyond the audio enhancements, the macOS code also points to a "server-based visual reasoning" tool. This suggests the wearable will transmit visual data to Apple's servers to process complex Visual Intelligence requests.

A recent report pointed out that while the camera-equipped AirPods could lack video recording capabilities, they could help feed information into Siri AI for better contextual answers.

While Apple is still working on the software in macOS Tahoe, a retail launch of the camera-equipped AirPods is still quite far off. Current industry expectations point to a fall 2027 launch, potentially at the same time as the iPhone's 20th anniversary and the iPhone 20 series' launch.

As of now, all eyes are on Apple's Surprise and Shine event scheduled for September 9, 2026. The Cupertino giant is expected to announce AirPods 5 and AirPods 5 with ANC alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Ultra foldable.
