Impressed by the level and the speed of our industry transformation. 👉 Digitization is full stack now. Freeflow, intelligent traffic systems, connected corridors.. not forgetting the electrification shift and its challenges. 👉 Safety keeps being core to investment and to its return, with always more innovations: brilliant solutions awarded about signaling and lighting. 👉 Resilience and decarbonization are now entering the wider discipline of asset management, that's a signal worth tracking. Sustainability and climate are definitely at the table, supported by persistent EU agenda and policies. This week, we had Davide Lo Presti talk with us about pavement LCA, rubberised asphalt, wake-up calls, teaching the next generation, and tipping points in sustainable infrastructure. Who is Davide, you ask? Davide Lo Presti is Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering at the University of Palermo, where he leads the SMARTiLab (Sustainable, Multifunctional, Automated and Resilient Transport Infrastructure) and is part of the Centre of Sustainability and Ecological Transition. His research focuses on sustainable pavement materials, reclaimed asphalt, alternative binders, and Life Cycle Assessment methodology for transport infrastructure. Lo Presti began his research career at the University of Nottingham, where his doctoral and post-doctoral work on crumb rubber asphalt became one of the most-downloaded papers in Construction and Building Materials for nearly a decade. Over twenty years, he has led and contributed to multiple European research programmes, including Re-Road, Back to Pave, Pavement LCM, SMARTI, and SURPAVE, an international master's programme on sustainable and resilient pavement engineering supported by the European Commission. He is one of the forces behind ROADLCA2026 Palermo, the International Symposium on Pavement and Bridge Life Cycle Assessment, which he is hosting in Palermo in October 2026. We leave you with the finishing words of the interview: Renaud: What would make you say 'sustainable infrastructure has reached the tipping point, it is now mainstream'? Davide: I do not know whether I am going to see it. But what is really important to me is to be on the path. To see students who come at the beginning of their journey, and finish talking with the language and the ideas and the intuition driven by this learning process. They start to have ideas. They start to consider things. That is the biggest reward. Maybe things will not happen immediately, but if you start to see people thinking in a certain way, then it will become natural. Whatever people do, it will be expressed in how we live, in our society. That is my tipping point.

Now two years in a row, the ITF - International Transport Forum at the OECD 's main theme is "RESILIENCE". In Leipzig, this week were 1200+ participants, transport ministers and infrastructure professionals from 80 countries. Thanks to International Road Federation (IRF) - Official Account, EBRD , Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), EASST Academy for a great discussion around “Aligning Multi-Stakeholder Engagement for Resilient Transport Investment” Two things stood out: ➡️ Digital tools are now expected. Not optional anymore, the sector understands it needs data to make decisions. That is a new consensus ! ➡️ Resilience needs to get more systematic attention. Projects require real numbers to unlock financing, satisfy insurers, and prove impact, so infrastructure keeps going within this new context (economical, climate, political..) What is the gap between what AI promises and what actually happens in sustainable civil engineering? We have been running a closed early-access program for the past few weeks: 9 sessions, 8 clients, 5 countries, and actual project BOQ files. Confirming what we already knew: - AI data extraction: file structure is everything. A well-structured file is quickly usable and not prone to interpretation errors. A messy one reveals every assumption the AI has to make: garbage in, garbage out. - AI materials mapping / matching: mandatory human review, or don't even think about it. When several options could fit, AI selects one by default. Warm mix vs hot mix asphalt: different carbon values, but the AI may not distinguish those without enough context. - We're not there (yet!) for edge cases like files with unstructured data, 2,500-row stress tests, or currency inconsistencies across international projects.
