I was just wondering if there are people here who opt for 3rd party instead of comprehensive insurance for vehicles with market value higher than say RM50k and remain relatively safe. :D

There may be few reasons for doing so, and in my case there may be a new car purchase in the near future and I intend to keep the current car but want to transfer the NCD to the new car. I've got to know that the NCD cannot be shared under a single owner / insurance policy so 2 vehicles mean 2 insurance policies with 2 NCDs, unless there is another way to do it.

Throughout my 20+ driving years experience the NCD has been always intact and accident claims were always through the other party's insurance and not my own insurance since it's the other party's fault. It's not many though, only 2 accidents where the other motorist knocked the rear bumper of my vehicle. The latest insurance claim about 4 years ago which caused the NCD of my old vehicle to be gone is just low amount of RM5k+ as I was expecting the cost of repair to be more than RM10k. It's a mistake on my part to make a claim via insurance which caused the NCD to get back to 0% as I would have used my own money for the repair if I knew actual cost of the repair. With a 0% NCD and slow climb every year to reach 55%, the cost of a comprehensive insurance especially with a new vehicle costing >RM100k is rather high. Hence the thought of transferring the NCD to the newer vehicle.

not recommended third party for rm50k unless you hardly drive your car and parked in a safe space. the difference in insurance price is not much.

better you find those car insurance with mileage discounts if you drive less

Thanks, don't think I have seen any comprehensive insurance with mileage discounts although it's a low mileage vehicle. Guess it's still safer to go with comprehensive unless the value of the vehicle is RM20k or less.

Not sure why you want to buy 3rd party... it is not cheaper by a lot. If you really dont drive the old car after you get the new car, just leave the car without insurance until you need it and renew.

Alternatively you can also opt for Promilej by P&O which allow you to select your desired mileage for a reduced insurance cost. Etiqa also had something similar where you will have to update your mileage in the app and could get up to 20% of your insurance cost (does not include addons) depending on your mileage.

3rd party will be cheaper if compared to comprehensive insurance with 0% or or low NCD. WHen compared to 55% NCD then perhaps the difference between 3rd party and comprehensive is not much.

Will check out those insurance options which was listed above in due time and will see if it will make any meaningful difference with low mileage vehicle. Thanks. It's usually the NCD which is the killer, bumping up the insurance premium if it's far from 55%.
