12 bioeconomy starups have emerged from a joint VTT and Aalto University programme! 👏👨🔬 💡 Over eight years, FinnCERES has turned materials research into real-world solutions. Startups such as Woamy, Elea & Lili Ltd and LignoSphere are advancing solutions from wood-based biofoams to cellulose-based materials, adhesives and coatings. 📝 FinnCERES has produced more than 1,280 scientific publications, alongside 144 patents and nearly 450 invention disclosures. The ecosystem now brings together over 600 partners and has trained more than 400 experts. Flexible green hydrogen production is now possible even in the toughest power and climate conditions 🌨️ ⚡ Europe’s energy transition needs hydrogen systems that can respond to variable renewable electricity. We have developed a PEM electrolyser to do exactly that. 📦 Our containerised, fully automated system is factory tested and ready to deploy. Last summer, in rainy Jokioinen, researchers harvested grass to explore how it could be used for more than animal feed 🍀 🧪 After harvesting, the grass was stabilised and processed in VTT laboratories in Espoo and Jyväskylä. From this raw material, we extracted high quality proteins, released sugars for microbial fermentation and produced fibre based packaging with up to 60 percent grass content. 👨🔬 Together with partners, we are developing new ways to turn locally grown grass into food, feed and material products and to create new value chains for rural areas. Mines often make a million-euro call based on a few samples from a pile of rock the size of an apartment block 🪨 That inefficiency is where HYPERMINE began. ⛏️ Developed at VTT, HYPERMINE's technology combines laser illumination, hyperspectral sensing and machine learning to sort valuable minerals from waste directly at the excavation stage. ⛏️ The result is up to 100 times higher decision accuracy, up to 10% higher profitability for mines, and significantly lower environmental impact, including around 10% less energy use and 15% less water and acid consumption. ⛏️ HYPERMINE is now piloting the technology in mines across several countries.
