20 high-potential defence and dual-use start-ups and scale-ups came to Tallinn for a kick-off bootcamp to remember at the beginning of September.
As one of the specialized bootcamps organised across Europe under the European Commission's EUDIS Business Accelerator, this event brought together entrepreneurs, military representatives, institutional stakeholders, investors, and business experts.
The gathering highlighted Europe's commitment to closer collaboration between innovation and operational needs, with the aim of strengthening our collective defence innovation ecosystem.
Day 1: Ecosystem Immersion and Strategic Alignment
The opening afternoon introduced participants to the Estonian defence ecosystem, highlighting collaboration pathways and market opportunities for start-ups.
As companies attended their first bootcamp following their entry into the EDF-funded programme, European Commission representatives were present to deep dive on EU support mechanisms.
To lay the groundwork for the months ahead, the first day included:
- Strategic presentations of EU support mechanisms
- Hands-on workshops for start-ups and their Coaches to meet in person and review their scorecards.
- A networking dinner bringing together founders, experts, and speakers.
Day 2: Navigating Baltic and Nordic Defence Markets
The second day shifted focus toward the Baltic and Nordic defence ecosystem, examining strategic priorities and regional market differences. Participants gained vital insights into Estonian Defense primes and context.
Highlighting the operational focus of the bootcamp, the cohort received direct capability requirements and frontline feedback from key military stakeholders, including:
- Azov Battalion, right from the frontlines.
- The French military mission in Estonia.
Building on these insights, each start-up participated in an afternoon workshop to pitch their technologies directly to Baltic institutional stakeholders, end-users, military veterans, and investors. These direct exchanges enabled companies to align their solutions with real-world needs before the day closed with a networking buffet dinner.
Day 3: Practical Pathways to Growth and Integration
The final day provided practical guidance on navigating EU-funded grant opportunities. Established defence entrepreneurs shared case studies and best practices to help start-ups avoid common market pitfalls.
Through highly interactive sessions, the cohort explored technology testing pathways, featuring:
- A dedicated session on testing infrastructures.
- Technical guidance from VTT outlining the roadmap and readiness levels required for eligibility.
- An exclusive onsite visit to Krattworks, providing participants with direct engagement alongside a successful defence start-up founding team.
Building Europe's Defence Innovation Ecosystem, The EUDIS Business Accelerator continues to do more than supporting the growth of individual companies.
By creating opportunities for direct engagement between innovators, defence end-users, industry leaders, and investors, the programme helps innovative technologies evolve into operational capabilities that respond directly to Europe's strategic priorities.
By connecting these vital communities, the initiative actively contributes to strengthening Europe's technological sovereignty, industrial competitiveness, and defence resilience. This sounds like something you would like to be a part of? Please contact us!
