  • 🚀 The preliminary agenda is out for the 9th ENES HPC Workshop As climate and weather models move toward exascale, km-scale resolution and AI-enhanced workflows, the technical challenges are becoming more complex and more interconnected. This year’s ENES HPC Workshop (19–21 May, SMHI, Sweden) is structured around four key areas shaping the future of our community: 🔹 Collaboration From European infrastructures to international initiatives like Digital Twin Earth and AI factories, how do we better connect people, platforms and projects? 🔹 Performance & Accelerators Real-world experiences porting models to GPUs, performance portability, and co-design with emerging architectures. 🔹 AI & Machine Learning From foundation models to neural forecasting systems, exploring how AI is reshaping climate and weather modelling. 🔹 Data The other bottleneck: infrastructure, compression, workflows, and data requirements for next-generation models and AI. The programme brings together speakers from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts - ECMWF, CMCC Foundation - Centro Euro Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici, German Climate Computing Center | DKRZ |, Barcelona Supercomputing Center, EPCC, Mercator Digital Ocean, Columbia University and many more. 📍 Norrköping, Sweden (SMHI) 📅 19–21 May 2026 📝 Registration is open until 17 April: https://lnkd.in/ekJjAfzY If you're working at the intersection of climate modelling and HPC, this is where the real discussions are happening. #HPC #ClimateScience #Weather #AI #Exascale #ENES #ESiWACE

  • 🌍 How can we make weather and climate simulations ready for the exascale era? Weather and climate simulations are among the most computationally demanding scientific applications. As Europe moves toward exascale supercomputing, these models must evolve to fully exploit the power of next-generation HPC systems. ⏩ This is where ESiWACE3 comes in. ESiWACE3 (Centre of Excellence in Simulation of Weather and Climate in Europe – Phase 3) supports the European Earth system modelling community in preparing weather and climate models for the future of high-performance computing. Coordinated by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, the project brings together leading HPC centres, research institutions, and domain experts across Europe to: 🔹 Improve the performance and scalability of weather and climate models 🔹 Develop advanced tools and workflows for high-resolution simulations 🔹 Support the community with services, expertise, and training 🎬 Watch the animation to discover how ESiWACE3 is helping advance weather and climate simulations in the exascale era: https://lnkd.in/eHQeXnHZ

  • 🤩 Great to see HANAMI bringing together the EU and Japan HPC communities at Supercomputing Asia 2026 and the ACM Asian School on HPC & AI. Strong international collaboration like this is essential for advancing research in climate, materials and biomedical sciences — and very much aligned with the work we do at ESiWACE.

Today, on 11 February — International Day of Women and Girls in Science (#11F), we celebrate the women advancing research, technology, and innovation across every field — from High-Performance Computing (HPC) to emergency and medical sciences. Despite progress, women still represent less than one-third of researchers globally, and remain significantly underrepresented in advanced computing and leadership roles. Increasing participation is not only a matter of equity — it directly strengthens the quality, impact, and innovation of science. Building more inclusive environments, supporting mentorship, and creating equitable opportunities are essential steps toward closing this gap. On this day, we recognise the contributions of women scientists and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that talent — regardless of gender — can thrive and shape the future of science. Let’s continue working together to inspire the next generation of researchers and innovators. #WomenInScience #GenderEquality #HPC #STEM #Research #11F

  • Yesterday we had the pleasure of organising the workshop “Rethinking scientific applications for exascale and emerging architectures: the Centres of Excellence challenge” at HiPEAC 2026 in Kraków — and it was a fantastic opportunity for networking, knowledge exchange, and strengthening collaboration across Centres of Excellence 🤝 The workshop brought together a vibrant community working at the forefront of HPC and Quantum computing, all focused on how scientific applications must evolve for exascale systems and emerging heterogeneous architectures. A particularly inspiring element was the strong presence of early-career researchers and speakers from underrepresented groups across European HPC and Quantum CoEs 👩🔬👨💻🌍 Their perspectives, hands-on experiences, and fresh ideas truly shaped the discussions throughout the day. From ESiWACE3, we were glad to count on Juniper Tyree, who presented “Exploring Lossy Data Compression in an Online Open Science Laboratory for Climate Science and Meteorology” — a great example of how innovative approaches are helping address data and performance challenges in large-scale scientific workflows. Building on previous HiPEAC CoE workshops, this event reinforced how essential it is to deepen collaboration across the community and foster closer interaction between HPC and Quantum initiatives within the EuroHPC ecosystem. A big thank you to all speakers, participants, and fellow organisers from the European Centres of Excellence — your contributions made this workshop a real success. Looking forward to the collaborations that will grow from here 🚀
