ALBA is the only synchrotron light source in Spain. It is a complex of electron accelerators to produce synchrotron light, which allows visualization of the atomic structure of matter as well as the study of its properties. ALBA is in operation since May 2012 and has 13 beamlines which are able to perform experiments in different scientific fields: physics, chemistry, life sciences, materials science, cultural heritage, biology, nanotechnology,... One new beamline is under construction. It also hosts complementary facilities, and an Electron Microscopy Center partnership. The facility is currently growing by constructing multiple more beamlines, expanding the Electron Microscopy Center, and integrating advanced data analytics, to sum up a wide range of infrastructures geared toward finding solutions to societal challenges. This scientific infrastructure produces about 6.000 hours of beamtime per year and is available for the academic and the industrial sector to give service to more than 3.500 researchers every year.

I am pleased to share the recent cryo–electron microscopy results obtained by Prof Ignaci Fita from IBMB and Prof Jaume Pinyol from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona at the Cryo-EM Platform of IBMB at ALBA Synchrotron. Their research focuses on the structural and molecular biology of Mycoplasma pneumoniae, a human pathogen responsible for atypical pneumonia and other respiratory infections. As one of the smallest self-replicating bacteria, M. pneumoniae presents unique structural adaptations that are directly linked to its pathogenicity, host interaction mechanisms, and reduced genome organization. Through access to state-of-the-art cryo-EM instrumentation at the IBMB-CSIC Cryo-EM Platform, their work has generated high-resolution structural data providing new insights into the architecture of key macromolecular complexes in M. pneumoniae. These findings contribute to a deeper mechanistic understanding of how this minimal bacterium organizes its molecular machinery to sustain infection and survival. This achievement highlights the impact of cryo-EM in tackling structurally challenging biological systems and underscores the importance of specialized infrastructure and expert support in advancing high-resolution structural biology projects. #synchrotronscience How Do Organic Batteries Store Energy? 🥳 We're happy to share a study carried out in close collaboration between the MIRAS beamline at #ALBASynchrotron and Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) that reveals how organic battery electrodes store charge in real time. Using operando synchrotron-based infrared microspectroscopy (SR-μFTIR), the team visualised the chemical transformations occurring in polyimide electrodes during battery cycling, shedding light on the redox mechanisms that govern energy storage. 🔋 This is crucial for improving sodium-ion batteries, much more abundant and cheaper than lithium. #EnergyStorage #Batteries #SustainableBatteries #ALBAScience 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ecuvb5zM
