Section 3: 'I have found evidence that some people use “fruit” as a plural count noun.' I'm not sure I agree that this is general/truly count. '17 fruit from the genus Vaccinium are rich in phytonutrients' sounds dreadful. True countness is shown by acceptance of a numeral. In any case, I'd say use of 'fruit' as a plural-form (as opposed to an obvious noncount usage referencing plurality) is thankfully very rare ... even non-standard. // But a thorough answer.
