Day 5 at men’s curling worlds: Canada's Dunstone, Lott forever 'feel the fire' as long-time teammates
If Matt Dunstone is ‘The Sheriff’, that must make Colton Lott ‘The Deputy.’ Right? After all, Canada’s clutch shooters at the 2026 World Men’s Curling Championship are pretty much joined at the hip. Have been for a good chunk of the last 15 years, with third Lott riding shotgun for skip Dunstone. “I couldn’t be happier curling with him,” said Lott, a 30-year-old native of Selkirk, Man. “Then, off the ice, Matt’s like a brother to me.” The two superstar curlers are, of course, brothers in arms at this week’s worlds in Ogden, Utah, trying to bring home a title from the gala event that has eluded Canadian men since way back in 2017 Edmonton, when Brad Gushue captured his only world crown. Joined by world-renowned ‘Broom Brothers’ E.J. and Ryan Harnden as the front-enders, Dunstone and Lott are on a mission that was in the works for them many years back, it seems. After a weekend speed-bump, they’ve found their game again at the worlds in Ogden, Utah, driving to consecutive victories three and four Tuesday in an 8-4 morning decision over China’s Xiaoming Xu and a magnificent 10-3 evening result over Sweden’s Niklas Edin. “It’s just that curling friendship bond that we have,” said Lott, of his relationship with Dunstone. “It’s kind of indescribable in a way — like when I went and stepped in, you could just feel the fire right away. You could feel us. “We’re just always on the same page, always clicking. And, especially when we play, it’s very seamless and easy and a flow that is really nice.” Just how good is Canada curling at the worlds? Cue their performances the last 48 hours, when they draw all the eyeballs — and praise — at the worlds. Dunstone aced Tuesday night’s biggie against legend Edin and Sweden with a 100% mark — the first by a Canadian skip at men’s worlds since Brendan Bottcher back in the 2021 Calgary bubble — as part of a night that saw Canada steal four in the first end en route to the triumph.
