👉 Development of the Sørlige Nordsjø II offshore wind project could directly and indirectly employ 2,100 people in Agder and create ripple effects worth NOK 7.9 billion for the region, according to a new analysis from PwC. In addition, the operational phase could employ a further 1,250 people directly and indirectly and generate NOK 4.3 billion more in value creation. “Norway’s first large-scale wind farm will have a formidable effect on Agder. Sørlige Nordsjø II will create new jobs and secure existing jobs in many professions and industries,” says Kristian Johnsen, Project Manager Offshore Wind at GCE NODE. GCE NODE has played a key role in bringing together and promoting Agder as Norway’s leading offshore wind region. On behalf of GCE NODE, and with support from Agder fylkeskommune and Næringsforeningen i Kristiansandsregionen, PwC has conducted a ripple effect analysis that looks at the effect that the development of Sørlige Nordsjø II could have on Agder. “We see that offshore wind will make a strong contribution to the region’s working life and businesses,” says Johnsen. Given that there is uncertainty related to which solutions and suppliers the project will choose, the report has described a high scenario (many suppliers from Agder) and a low scenario (fewer suppliers from Agder). In the low scenario, Sørlige Nordsjø II will employ 750 people in Agder and generate NOK 2.7 billion in value creation. The operating phase for the low scenario estimates 950 employees and NOK 3.9 billion in value creation. “The difference between the high and low scenarios is significant and largely related to whether an Agder port will be involved in the development of the Sørlige Nordsjø II project,” explains André Arntsen Fjelltveit, Partner at PwC and responsible for the ripple effect analysis. “Agder should therefore come together to develop an assembly port for the wind turbines – for example in Mandal or Lyngdal. The transition towards low and zero-emission ferry operations is accelerating, and projects like this show what is already possible at scale. I’m pleased that Wärtsilä’s integrated electric propulsion solutions have now been selected for all three of Molslinjen’s new battery-electric high-speed ferries being built by Incat Tasmania. Together, these vessels represent an important step forward for sustainable ferry transport, combining electrification, high performance and operational efficiency on one of Europe’s busiest ferry routes. Collaboration across the maritime ecosystem will be essential as shipping continues its transition towards net-zero emissions, and it is exciting to see leading operators and shipbuilders continuing to push the industry forward. Norway’s Ministry of Energy has officially awarded two project areas for floating offshore wind in the Utsira Nord zone marking a key milestone in the development of commercial floating wind on the NCS. The areas have been allocated to two strong consortia: Equinor with Vårgrønn and a partnership between Deep Wind Offshore and EDF. Congratulations to Daniel Rogstad, Stephen Bull OBE and Knut Vassbotn amongst many others involved. 🚢 A new milestone for the Vattenfall SOV project We are proud to share that the steel cutting ceremony of the first Service Operation Vessel (SOV) for Vattenfall took place on November 27th at ZPMC, marking the official start of construction. Designed with Salt Ship Design AS, these future SOVs will combine efficiency, safety and sustainability, with advanced offshore capabilities and enhanced living conditions for technicians operating in the North Sea. “Our priority has always been to combine operational excellence with the well-being of people on board. Port of Hirtshals takes important step towards coming port expansion. STORM OF THE CENTURY HITS THE PORT EXPANSION 🌀 Waves crash down on the construction with tremendous force. You could call it the storm of the century. Luckely, the power of the weather gods is only a simulation — taking place in a wave basin at Aalborg University, where the first element of the port expansion is now being put to the test. A piece of the new breakwater for port of Hirtshals has been moved into the laboratory at BUILD – Department of the Build Environment at Aalborg University. Stones and blocks have been stacked in a precise shape mirroring the breakwater that will form the first stage of the upcoming expansion of the North Jutland port. In the impressive wave basin, powerful waves surge over the structure while representatives from the university and the port calmly observe. The basin simulates wave conditions ranging from average weather to the most extreme storm seen in a hundred years. The first phase of the Port of Hirtshals expansion will focus on improving navigational conditions through a wider entrance channel and an extension of the outer western breakwater. It is elements of this extended Western Breakwater that are now being tested. “Through the experiments here at Aalborg University, we gain critical insights into how to build a strong and cost-effective structure. Extending the Western Breakwater is no simple task, and it’s crucial that every decision is carefully evaluated. The experiments at the university allow us to simulate real conditions and obtain results that strengthen our project and increase predictability,” says Niels Kiersgaard, CTO and Head of the Port Expansion at Hirtshals Havn. We are strengthening our position at Port of Esbjerg with a significant expansion of our premises. Blue Water has entered into an agreement to take over a 200,000 m² area, which will be incorporated into our extensive wind turbine operations. "The new area is a unique chance for us to meet the growing demand from the wind industry. Big milestone, and also a nice reminder that sustainability in our line of work is rarely about slogans. In many of the locations where we operate, being connected to the grid isn’t something you can just “decide”, it often takes major capex, months of technical work, and lengthy negotiations with the utility, especially in more isolated industrial areas. All the more credit to Ahmed Farouk and the UAE team for getting this over the line. Moving away from 100 percent generator power will cut fuel burn materially, improve reliability, and deliver a meaningful reduction in emissions, not just for this site, but across the Group as we replicate similar upgrades wherever we can.

The #floatingoffshorewind industry must see more #salamander and #goliatvind projects executed to become a successful #european supply chain. GW scale floating windfarms will be a result of pre commercial projects like this and predictable tender processes for the large scale windfarms. At present we got neither but it seems like we are slowly turning in the right direction. But too slow still. While we need more projects across Europe - and I am cheering for them all - Per Lunds message to Energidepartementet (Norge) and Terje Aasland is there is a consequence to Norwegian Industry when not making decisions in time. The supply chain will be developed outside Norway. That said, let there be no doubt, we are all fully committed to #GoliatVIND and waiting for the concession to be granted. Both GoliatVIND and Salamander is good for GW auctions, if successfully supported to FID. The question is who will get the advantage of kickstarting the national supply chain for export friendly semi sub windfarm technology. #UK or #Norway? And can we wait for Utsira Nord auction to maybe be successful in about 3 years timer?!

Ørsted has recently transferred its 80 % stake in the pioneering 100 MW Salamander project—located about 35 km off Peterhead, Scotland—to floating wind specialist Odfjell Oceanwind. The move signifies a strategic pivot in the development of this demonstration-scale initiative, and we are looking forward with great enthusiasm to the new collaboration and it´s path to enabling commercial scale floating wind.

If offshore wind is to scale faster and become more cost-competitive, industrialization has to happen in the details. Not just in strategy slides 🤝 That is why I am looking forward to the WIS Workshop: Advancing Industrialization of Offshore wind in Esbjerg on April 14. What makes WIS valuable is its focus on the operational layer: tools, equipment, interfaces, and standards that can reduce complexity, improve reuse, and support a stronger supply chain. For those of us working in Vestas, that makes this work highly relevant. We are part of the reality WIS is trying to improve: the handovers, requirements, transport solutions, and practical interfaces that influence how efficiently offshore wind projects can actually be delivered. These are exactly the kinds of topics that matter when projects move from ambition to execution. I am looking forward to discussing that at the Esbjerg partnership event and to explore where standardization can make the biggest difference next.
