Student project: Apple design philosophy insights

Dear Apple Design Team,

My name is Mira and I am currently studying Industrial Design at Mid Sweden University in Sweden. As part of a university project, we have been assigned to design a handheld mixer inspired by a specific brand. I have chosen Apple as my brand focus.

The purpose of the project is to interpret how a brand’s design philosophy, values, and functional priorities could translate into a new product category.

I fully understand that you may not be able to share internal or confidential information. However, I would be very grateful if you could share any general insights regarding:

  • How Apple approaches form and function in product development
  • What values are most important when designing everyday consumer products
  • How Apple balances minimalism with usability
  • How you view sustainability and material choices in smaller household products

Any general guidance, references to public resources, or design principles would be deeply appreciated and used purely for academic purposes.

Thank you very much for your time.

Kind regards,

Mira

Sorry. We are just other Apple users in this community forum and cannot help you with your very well thought out request. My best suggestion would be to contact the research librarian at your university. They are amazingly knowledgeable about how to conduct research. (I know this from experience.)

Since you are not likely to find any official Apple answers to your specific questions, you are going to have to do some research on the company and come up with your own answers, based on your research.

This is a very interesting project. I wish you good luck.

On a side note - I am asking the moderators to remove your email address and personal information. It is never good to publish that in a public forum.

I totally agree with Carol, a very interesting project.

Based on history, Apple's confidentiality policies have made students' researching of the company very difficult. Apple are in a hyper-competitive market and need to protect key areas that give them an edge by "playing their cards close to the chest." I suspect "design" is a sensitive key area considering how many other companies copy the "look" of Apple devices and software.

As you know , outside sites that talk about Apple have, shall we say, "highly divergent levels of integrity." Some sites are Apple-friendly and others are clearly haters. It is very hard t find a truly neutral, refereed source in outside research sites for any field. I do a lot of online research in my area, a small sub-set of physics, and struggle with the same issues. One has to use a fine sieve to separate the fact from the folly.

If you wish to contact an Apple corporate office, from your country's version of the Apple home page, scroll to the bottom and find a link in a small grey font that is the equivalent of "Contact Apple." The resulting page will, about halfway down, show the closest corporate presence.

Hoping for your sake my assessment is deeply wrong,

Allan
