Just back from three intense days at health.tech Basel, following in particular the AI in Healthcare track — and the signal is clear: we still have some way to go from pilot to operational deployment. That “pilot-to-scale” gap is exactly our focus. The AI in Healthcare Use Case Platform turns fragmented pilots into deployment-ready solution packages — ethical, safe, practical and scalable. I am proud to work on this with my long-standing partner Delft University of Technology, a leader in the design of ethical AI and an accredited WHO Collaborating Centre in the field of Ethics and Governance of AI in Healthcare. My overall impression of the conference was that healthcare is about to be reinvented at all levels — from empowering individuals on their health journeys to medical science. It became clear that the technology is ready, but people and health systems are not. A small, personal example: I recently visited my GP (public system) here in Spain. When I asked about my health record, he admitted he had no information about me. I offered to share everything digitally in seconds. He said it wasn’t possible. Instead, I was asked to print my records so the admin team could make scans— and only then he could access them at my next appointment. But it’s not just a problem of healthcare systems. It’s mindset, incentives, and courage to change. Many people and organisations avoid that territory because the status quo feels safer and more comfortable. But those who don’t move will be left behind. Now you know what is on my heart and on my mind. I’m grateful to be able to share it with you, and I’m available to continue the discussion and collaboration. I’m excited about the partnerships that may come out of my encounters. My belief: don’t spend too much time searching the unknown. Stay curious, be there — at the right place and at the right time. Basel, 2–5 March was a good example… 😊 Another opportunity I’m looking at is COP 31 in Antalya (Turkey) on the issue of ‘Health and Environment’. Connectome Health raises 2 million USD pre-seed round Zurich-based neurotech startup Connectome Health has secured 2 million USD in a pre-seed funding round. The investment includes 120,000 USD in non-dilutive public funding. The round was led by Redstone with participation from Transatlantic Angels, Concept Ventures, and Octopus Ventures. Founded in 2024 by neuroscientists Scherdel and Dr. Rufus Mitchell-Heggs, Connectome Health focuses on longitudinal tracking of brain activity. By collecting neural signals alongside daily context such as sleep and behavioral load, the company aims to develop personalized baselines for identifying cognitive changes. The founders bring significant experience from consumer health and global research sectors to the venture. The capital will be used to support the rollout of the company platform with select partners and to further research and development efforts. Furthermore, Connectome Health plans to expand its scope beyond lifestyle and wearable integration into broader diagnostic applications.

When Bavaria’s Minister President opens 𝐃𝐋𝐃 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐇𝐮𝐛: 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐈 by recalling his visit to a quantum start-up in Garching, you know deep tech is no longer a niche topic.   The event began with a keynote by Dr. Markus Söder, who emphasized Bavaria’s strength in deep tech start-ups. He recalled his visit to our planqc headquarters in Garching last year and celebrated with us the 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐪𝐜: “𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒂 𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕 𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚. A key factor for quantum computing will be sustained political support for initiatives such as the DLR Quantum Computing Initiative and the Munich Quantum Valley.   Beyond that, in 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐦 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐬, governments must also act as anchor customers. Yesterday, Prior Labs released a new model called Tiny-TSM. It was interesting to see Frank Hutter's team move away from tabular models toward more classical time-series architectures. [Edit: Frank pointed out this was a side project of Felix] 🧐 I’m generally aligned with the idea of small, efficient models, but several methodological choices were surprising, particularly given the claims made. ‼️ Questions for Felix Birkel and Frank Hutter: - As you noted, evaluating on a single dataset and drawing broad conclusions is (at least) problematic. Given that, why did you also drop ~60% of the unique series in Gift-Eval (fin/econ)??? - Excluding them seems hard to justify especially for a model claiming fast, general forecasting performance. 😳 - Gift-Eval uses the geometric mean of MASE as the primary metric. Why did you deviate from this and introduce your own metric? 😬 - Related: you don’t seem to use the geometric averaging required by Gift-Eval when aggregating results. What averaging method did you use, and why not adhere to the benchmark’s methodology? - Why did you omit mentioning the prior work from Vijay Ekambaram from IBM on Tiny Mixers? It is hard to believe you were not aware of that line of research and their great results. - Regarding the drift features: if they effectively triple the input size, wouldn’t a 3× faster convergence simply result from feeding 3× more data per batch rather than architectural advantages? - Finally, should we understand that TabPFN-TS and TempoTabPFN are now outperformed by Tiny-TSM? #HappyForecasting

In his recent conversation with Harald Lesch on TerraX #Lesch & Co (ZDF), Nobel laureate #FerencKrausz takes us on a journey: from the laser revolution to the creation of attosecond physics, where we can now observe electron motion in real time. What struck me most is not only the elegance of this fundamental research, but its transformative application in medicine. Krausz and his team (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München & Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics and many more) have shown how infrared fingerprinting of blood samples, combined with artificial intelligence, can detect early signs of #diseases such as cancer, diabetes, COPD and cardiovascular conditions. Their results point to a future where a single drop of blood could reveal life saving information. This has already been demonstrated by a paper from Marinus Huber et. al. (DOI: 10.7554/eLife.68758), where FTIR together with #AI successfully identified cancer specific signatures in blood samples. The technology could be available in the near future, yet political support often lags even when lives are at stake. Society must be informed and engaged so that fundamental research and its applications receive the support they deserve❗️ Every year, 17 million people die prematurely from non communicable diseases. Shaping the Future of #EthicalAI: Advancing #Recommender #Systems with #TUVienna & #YKMB ⭐ Five years ago, we established #Christian_Doppler_Laboratory for Advancing the State-of-the-Art of #RecommenderSystems in Multi-Domain Settings, led by Julia Neidhardt (Technical University of Vienna) in collaboration with YouKnowMeBest (YKMB). Together, we are working towards better online #recommendations by focusing on key aspects such as #accuracy, #diversity, and #fairness. 🔍 Why does this matter? Recommender systems play a crucial role in online experiences, from shopping suggestions to news consumption. However, they often come with challenges: 📌 Repetitive recommendations can limit user choices 📌 Filter bubbles can create one-sided perspectives Our research initiative at CDL RecSys aims to tackle these issues by developing more nuanced approaches that consider: ✅ Beyond-accuracy measures (novelty, diversity, serendipity) ✅ Multi-level user models (individual, group, and network levels) ✅ Long-term impacts of bias in recommender systems.
