An Urgent Call for Support

At Richmond Behavioral Health, we are witnessing a troubling shift.

The data we recently shared through our Well Rx assessments already painted a concerning picture:

  • Nearly half of individuals report skipping meals due to lack of money
  • More than half face housing instability
  • A majority struggle with unemployment and paying for basic utilities

This is not data from a crisis moment - this is data from a good day.

Today, the reality is worse.

Recent changes to SNAP (food assistance) requirements are accelerating instability for the individuals we serve. Many are losing access to food assistance and Medicaid – some, because they no longer qualify for assistance under the new federal definition of “able-bodied adult”; many, because they cannot navigate increasingly complex requirements while managing mental health conditions, unstable housing, or limited access to transportation and technology.

What we are seeing now is stark:

Individuals who were barely getting by are now going without food.

Missed paperwork is turning into missed meals.

Loss of benefits is leading to loss of stability - and, too often, crisis.

The Population We Serve

RBHA supports individuals with complex, overlapping needs, including:

  • Serious mental illness and substance use disorders
  • Chronic physical health conditions
  • Unstable or substandard housing
  • Limited access to transportation and technology
  • Low or inconsistent income

Many of these individuals now - technically - meet the federal definition of “able-bodied adults,” yet face significant functional barriers to maintaining employment or complying with administrative processes.

Why This Matters

Food insecurity is not an isolated issue. It directly impacts:

  • Mental health stability
  • Medication adherence
  • Engagement in treatment
  • Ability to seek and maintain employment
  • The overall health of our community

When basic needs are unmet, treatment and recovery become exponentially more difficult.

A Community Response Is Needed Now

RBHF is launching a broader effort to meet this moment:

  • Food Drive Initiative to rapidly increase available food resources
  • Corporate Partnerships to scale supply and distribution
  • Community Engagement Campaign to mobilize volunteers and donors

These efforts are not about future planning - they are about responding to needs that are happening right now.

How You Can Help

We are asking our community partners, businesses, and supporters to step forward. While on-going participation and donations are welcome and needed, we need support today for immediate food needs for individuals at risk of going without.

Can we count on you to make a donation or purchase by the end of May?

Donate Food

The Bottom Line

This is not just about hunger.

It is about stability, health, and dignity.

We have the data.

We see the need.

And right now, the gap is growing.

With your help, we can act quickly, expand our reach, and ensure that fewer individuals fall through the cracks.

Join us in turning urgency into action.

Thank you.
