The term GP-led secondaries often leads to confusion. These investments don’t mirror LP-led secondaries—they substitute sponsor-to-sponsor transactions. GPs stay invested, and primary capital is often brought in to support the next stage of growth. A better name for this fast-growing segment: continuation investments.

I’m going to share a short series of posts on the labelled bond market, starting with how 2025 actually played out. First up: Total corporate and sovereign issuance again came in at around USD 1tn+ in 2025, broadly in line with expectations at the start of the year. What stands out is the composition: Green issuance grew meaningfully year-on-year. That mattered because Social issuance saw clear declines, and SLBs and Transition remained small. So while the market looks stable at the headline level, it is also becoming more concentrated around what issuers and investors are comfortable scaling: environmental resilience and adaptations. In a more discerning issuance market, this matters. Confidence is increasingly anchored in clear, widely accepted use-of-proceeds structures. As we approach our well-deserved Christmas breaks, I decided to synthetise my many client meetings and discussions with BlackRock multi-asset investors this year into a few highlights and ideas that I’ll take into 2026 💡💡💡 … But it’s been such a busy year, I have too much to fit in one post! 😎 So, here’s the first of my five key takeaways from 2025 (look out for the others in the next few days…) 1️⃣ **2025 Takeaway #1 (of 5)** 🎄🎅🏻🎄🎅🏻 — Mega forces – big structural shifts like digital disruption and artificial intelligence (AI) – are increasingly driving markets and portfolio outcomes. — AI is the most obvious and dominant (Aladdin data estimates that ‘digital disruption and AI’ drives c. 52% of the risk/return of the S&P 500 and nearly 36% of the MSCI All Country World)*, but others such as the energy transition are also likely to be important drivers of returns in 2026 and beyond. — The traditional approach of centring asset allocation views around asset classes and regions therefore might no longer be sufficient, and controlling for exposure to mega forces is likely to become even more crucial – especially for EMEA clients, for whom home biases to European assets often result in under-ownership of AI winners, for example. — This goes beyond tactical asset allocation: including mega forces in strategic asset allocation processes will also be key – something the BlackRock Investment Institute has reflected through its Capital Market Assumptions. — And AI isn’t just influencing what we invest in, but also how we invest. In an increasingly data-driven world, blending systematic strategies (which leverage the power of big data and machine learning) with fundamental ones could broaden alpha sources within a target tracking-error budget, creating a more diversified alpha engine that combines judgement with rigour to meet the higher performance bar in today’s complex market. After years of “post-COVID turbulence”, 2025 may have marked a turning point: a broad normalisation across risk premia. In the Portfolio Positioning section of our Q1 Multi Asset “#SimplyPut”, Sui Kai Wong explains why this matters for allocation: when volatility normalises, portfolio exposure can normalise too. Key messages: - For the first time since 2022, volatility signals across major asset classes have settled below median levels. - Trend signals have improved, notably in US duration, supporting re-risking. - As a result, our Balanced strategy moved to ~165% market exposure (vs ~136% at the end of Q3 2025). The conclusion is refreshingly pragmatic: a normal market environment calls for normal positioning – not heroic bets, but disciplined exposure calibrated to a calmer risk backdrop.
