SAP may have just solved an API governance problem. And created a strategic ecosystem problem. With its updated API policy, SAP is drawing a much harder line: published APIs are allowed; non-published APIs are not. On paper, this makes sense. Clean Core, system stability, security, supportability, fair use, controlled extensibility; all valid points. But here is the uncomfortable question: What happens when the speed of innovation outside SAP becomes faster than the API surface SAP is willing to publish? Because in the AI era, APIs are no longer just integration plumbing. They are the oxygen supply for automation, agents, analytics, vertical apps, partner products and customer-specific innovation. If access becomes too narrow, too slow, or too dependent on SAP’s roadmap, developers will not stop building. They will simply build elsewhere. The real risk is not that SAP customers will immediately leave. They will not. SAP is deeply embedded in the enterprise core. The real risk is more subtle: SAP could slowly lose the innovation edge around the core. Partners may hesitate before building on uncertain interfaces. Customers may refactor, but also start pushing new AI and data workloads into platforms where access is more open. Developers may treat SAP less like a platform and more like a protected system of record that must be worked around. That is dangerous in the long run. A fortress protects what is inside. But if the bridges are too narrow, the market starts building new roads around it. SAP is right to protect stability. But if governance turns into friction, the next generation of enterprise innovation may happen adjacent to SAP, not inside the SAP ecosystem.The winners in AI will not only be the companies with the best systems of record. They will be the companies with the most attractive, trusted and usable system of access.
