𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐨𝐩𝐞 In early April, our colleague Ulf Gustafsson, Sustainability and Training Leader at Selecta Nordics, visited Rwanda to witness something extraordinary. In the hills where Selecta Coffee Fund (SCF) projects are growing strong roots, he met two Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs)—saving groups made up of coffee farmers who are not only growing coffee, but also growing something even more powerful: a future. These farmers, who received cows through SCF initiatives, have transformed the gift of livestock into a thriving model of self-reliance. What began as a way to support veterinary costs through community savings, has now blossomed into a vibrant culture of financial empowerment. In just one year, most members have gone from saving a single share per meeting to up to seven shares. That’s more than saving money—it’s saving dignity, dreams, and the ability to stand on their own feet. And it doesn’t stop there. Some groups have turned milk into income, collecting and selling it to provide jobs and stability for their communities. Then, in a moment that speaks to the soul of what we do—a calf, the firstborn of a SCF-donated cow, was gifted to another farmer. A symbol of trust. A new beginning. But with climate change threatening every harvest, that choice hasn't been easy. 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹. 🐖 On April 1st, the Selecta Coffee Fund (SCF) hosted a very special recognition event in Rwanda — honouring 40 of the best-performing coffee farmers across 20 farming groups supported by the SCF program. Each of these farmers was awarded a small livestock — 38 pigs and 2 goats (to respectfully accommodate religious preferences). More than symbolic, these animals represent opportunity, resilience, and a step toward greater financial independence. The event was proudly attended by: Ulf Gustafsson, Nordic Sustainability & Training Leader at Selecta, 👥 Local officials including the Nyamagabe District Vice Mayor for Economic Development, Agronomists, SCF Rwanda teams, and the incredible community of farmers ❤️ .
