“Epidemics start and end in communities. What is urgently required is scaling up the work at the community level and this is what the DRC Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC are doing.” Speaking to BBC News from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dr Petra Khoury, Global Health Director at the IFRC, warned that the outbreak remains out of control and called for urgent investment in locally led response. She highlighted the critical role of DRC Red Cross volunteers, who are engaging communities door to door, sharing trusted health information, and helping counter misinformation in an extremely challenging environment. As Dr Khoury underlined, outbreak response cannot rely on cycles of panic. Long-term investment in community preparedness and resilient health systems is essential to prevent crises from escalating.

“Border closures do not end epidemics. What stops an epidemic from spreading is the work we do at community level.” Speaking to CNN from Kinshasa, Dr Petra Khoury, Global Health Director at the IFRC, highlighted the urgent need to scale up community-level action as the Ebola outbreak spreads in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighbouring countries. With the support of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC, Red Cross volunteers are on the front lines, listening to communities, addressing fears and misinformation, supporting screening and prevention efforts. As Dr Khoury stressed, trust cannot be built overnight. It is earned through sustained presence before, during and after crises and it remains essential to stopping the spread of Ebola.
