Energy used to power, heat and cool buildings is responsible for up to 80% of CO₂ emissions in cities — making energy-efficient construction and retrofitting essential to accelerating the transition to NextGen cities. “We need to focus more on the so-called ‘thermal envelope’: the walls, roof, and windows that act as the skin of the building. Upgrading this envelope drastically improves energy performance. Advanced solutions, such as mineral-based insulating foams, façade systems or external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS) are vital.” In a recent interview with The Engineer UK, Edelio Bermejo, our Head of Innovation, explains why scaling refurbishment and advanced building solutions is critical to reducing operational carbon emissions across the built environment. 🏛️ Built with Holcim’s low-carbon ECOPact concrete and Geostone® decorative concrete, the award-winning Biyal-a Armostrong Creek Library and community hub in Australia combines architectural vision with measurable sustainability outcomes. 🤝 Inspired by the “living water” concept and developed in collaboration with the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, the library was designed as a welcoming space for connection, learning and creativity. 🌍 Custom ECOPact and Geostone mixes were developed to meet the structural and aesthetic demands of this landmark building, delivering full performance while reducing emissions. 🏆These high-value solutions helped enable more sustainable, expressive architecture contributing to the library’s 5-Star Green Star Buildings rating and its New Construction Grand Prize at the Green Solutions Awards 2024-2025. 🔗 Discover the full story: https://lnkd.in/e6hcKaRa #BuildingProgress #NextGenGrowth Holcim Australia
