Royal Bank of Canada and Bank of Montreal are reportedly in talks to sell Moneris, their jointly owned payments processing business, to Francisco Partners, in a transaction that could value the company at more than $2bn. According to the Financial Times, the private equity firm, which owns Verifone and holds a stake in Paysafe, is in discussions to acquire the Canadian merchant processor. A deal could be agreed by the summer, although talks have taken longer than expected and may still fail to produce a transaction. Other bidders could also yet emerge. The potential sale would mark a significant moment for Canada’s payments market. Moneris was founded in 2000 by RBC and BMO and has become one of the country’s most important merchant acquiring platforms. It processes more than five billion transactions a year and is understood to handle roughly a third of all business transactions in Canada https://lnkd.in/eFpDAMi2

CIBC’s Benjamin Tal says Canada is already in a per-capita recession the economy may still be growing in total, but on a per-person basis, it’s quietly shrinking. He points to a “frozen” housing market, slowing demand, and cooling inflation as signs that the Bank of Canada’s current policy stance may now be too restrictive. Despite that, the data and market pricing still suggest another hold at this month’s meeting. For now, policymakers appear to be choosing patience over action waiting to see if the slowdown deepens further before cutting rates.
