Happy to announce the publication of our latest research paper, led by our very talented student, Neel Patel, and in collaboration with the amazing Dr. Alexander Wong (University of Waterloo). The paper, titled "Empowering Tuberculosis Screening with Explainable Self-Supervised Deep Neural Networks", is now available online via IEEE! Leveraging self-supervision and knowledge distillation, our approach mirrors the learning process of radiologists, utilizing both limited labeled and extensive unlabeled data effectively. This work not only advances AI capabilities but also underscores the importance of explainable and accessible technology in healthcare. Plans are in motion for the University of Waterloo's new Free Electron Laser (FEL) facility, which will shape the future of health and environmental research. Led by Dr. Scott Hopkins in the University of Waterloo Faculty of Science, this unique-in-Canada project will enable researchers to analyze the molecular structure of substances, monitor chemical transformations in wastewater and identify biomarkers for diseases such as cancer. The FEL facility's proximity to the new Waterloo innovation hospital, slated to open in 2034, will foster collaborations between researchers and healthcare professionals, with the potential to accelerate the development of personalized medicine and other innovative treatments. I’m glad to see papers like this showing that #healthcare professionals are finding value in #immersivetechnology tools like #virtualreality #VR for simulation and training. Here is a summary of this work.   Objective: Assess the attitudes of Canadian orthopaedic surgeons and fellows toward the use of immersive virtual reality (iVR) in surgical training, clinical practice, and distance learning.   Methodology:   43 participants attended an iVR demonstration at an annual orthopaedic meeting. Real-time procedure casting allowed audience engagement. Participants completed a questionnaire evaluating iVR’s value in teaching, clinical practice, and distance education. Results:   Positive perceptions across all 13 questionnaire items (mean Likert scores ≥5). Agreement on iVR's value: 78–98% for teaching and learning 66–97% for clinical practice 88–100% for distance education and mentorship Conclusion: iVR is highly valued by Canadian orthopaedic surgeons and fellows for surgical training, clinical practice, and remote education. Its potential for distance learning, mentorship, and global education is promising.

But new research from UBC Okanagan has mathematically proven this isn’t just unlikely—it’s impossible. Researchers have shown that the fundamental nature of reality operates in a way that no computer could ever simulate. Their findings, published in the Journal of Holography Applications in Physics, go beyond simply suggesting that we’re not living in a simulated world like The Matrix.
