Morten Rand-Hendriksen reposted thisWhen copyright laundering schemes comes full circle 😂Morten Rand-Hendriksen reposted thisThis is either brilliant or scary: Anthropic accidentally leaked the TypeScript source code of Claude Code (which is closed source). Repos sharing the source are taken down with DMCA - as they share copyrighted code that they are not allowed to do so. This is all very standard until this point. BUT where things take a twist: this one repo rewrote the code using Python, and so it violates no copyright & cannot be taken down with DMCA requests! The brilliance: copyright does not protect certain kinds of derived works. Rewriting TypeScript code in Python means copyright probably doesn't apply...? The scary thing: it can be done in trivial amount of time, with AI agents. This one was done with Codex. This can be done not just for this specific codebase, but any codebase. So what happens with copyright? Will it evolve with AI, or be stuck pre-AI? If any company is a good one to test on what happens: it is Anthropic. AI labs greatly benefit from derived works not being considered as copyrightable: this is one of the reasons they can freely train on copyrighted work, after all. This repo is doing the same: taking copyrighted code by Anthropic (that Anthropic publicly shared!) and deriving it, transforming into another, common programming language. You can imagine Anthropic being in a pickle right now: 1. Do they just leave this, and look the other way? Ignoring that it's not exactly fair to transform their code and leave it up there, not wanting to poke the bear. 2. Or do they risk it and poke the bear: claim that claim copyright applies because the work is very clearly derived and mimics the original... but this could be bad for their own business in much bigger ways! E.g. imagine regulation coming into play that bans this (transforming code from one language to another.) Claude Code and other tools would have to refuse this kind of generation - and become a lot less useful. Lawsuits against AI labs could spike against labs like Anthropic and others. The losses from #2 could eclipse having this repo stay up. And you can bet it would be a high-profile case: an AI lab arguing copyright needs to be updated and explanded thanks to AI agents! So my bet is #1 happens. Not the interest of an AI lab to expand copyright protections to derived work cretated by an LLM... And it quietly turned developer machines into backdoors 😳 Axios is a programming library that helps your JavaScript code make HTTP/S requests (communicate with websites). Attackers hijacked a maintainer account on npm: → Shipped malicious versions (1.14.1, 0.30.4) → Injected a “helper” dependency: plain-crypto-js@4.2.1 → Triggered a cross-platform RAT (Mac, Windows, Linux) on install No exploit needed. Just trust. And this uncovered the uncomfortable truth: We’ve optimized software for speed. CI/CD pipelines. Auto-updates. AI-generated code pulling dependencies. But we didn’t redesign security for that world. So now the fastest teams are also the most exposed. AI is about to pour fuel on this. → Devs ship faster → more dependencies, less scrutiny → AI copilots write code that imports packages humans never review → Attackers use AI to generate polymorphic malware that looks “clean” Supply chain attacks were already up ~742% YoY. Now imagine that curve with AI on both sides. That’s why companies like Oscilar matter more than ever. They’re not scanning codebases. They’re watching behavior. Remember that Axios was live for just ~2-3 hours. That’s enough. Enough to infect dev machines. Enough to steal keys. Enough to move laterally. The old model assumed breaches start at the perimeter. This one starts inside your build process. Every modern company runs on open source. Which means every modern company shares the same risk. And the same illusion: That someone else checked the code. I reject both of these and suggest that now is the moments for Intrepid Leadership. Intrepid people understand that they are entering a dangerous situation - but they feel called to enter it anyway. I’ve spent the last few weeks updating my indie Unity workflow to 2026 standards with Claude Code and OpenAI Codex. The productivity gains are real. But the new pipeline keeps bothering me. The “correct” workflow is not just prompting for code. It’s building layers of supplemental files, context docs, specs, and refactor instructions so the model can keep generating, updating, and cleaning up code. And all of it runs through the meter. That is the part I cannot stop thinking about. Development starts to feel less like writing software and more like orchestrating token consumption. You can already see where this goes. Development cost forecasts will eventually carry token usage alongside salaries. Engineering velocity will be measured partly in API consumption. Entire pipelines will be built around AI being present at every step. That is the future these companies are trying to create. The current token pricing is obviously designed to drive adoption. Get developers and studios to rebuild their workflows around your API first. Once switching costs are real, reprice. At that point it is cheaper to stay than to rip the system back out. It is the classic platform playbook, just applied to software production itself. To be clear, I am not anti-tool. Claude Code and OpenAI Codex are genuinely useful. I am using them myself. But people should be honest about the trade: short-term productivity gains in exchange for long-term pricing exposure to a vendor whose ideal outcome is your dependency. Know what you are signing up for.

Designers are still stuffing design systems into prompts and docs hoping the LLM respects them. Past a certain length, docs get ignored. Rules get hallucinated away. Sharding them is critical, but doesn’t actually solve the issue. You don't make AI design systems better by adding more documentation. You make it better with linters, test harnesses, and tooling that verifies itself. Ai native coders have learned prompts, docs, and rules are only a fraction of the harness needed for AI to work well. ===Do this instead=== Turn your design into a JSON recipe: a declarative schema that describes what should exist, not how to build it. Then build a UI interpreter that renders it. Now you've unlocked something fundamentally different: → A component registry mapped from Storybook that stays in sync automatically → A “limitless” linter that validates AI-generated UI against design rules at build time via a hook → Agentic UI that can read, generate, and modify the recipe natively and at runtime if desired → Rapid iteration: change the concise recipe, not the code → Separation of concerns: a design description that is independent of implementation The recipe is the source of truth. The interpreter enforces it. The tooling catches what the LLM won't. That's not a design system. That's a design harness.

Morten Rand-Hendriksen liked thisMorten Rand-Hendriksen liked thisIs the work you're doing now what you imagined for yourself? I got asked some version of this a few times last week. I was at a Syracuse event where alumni meet journalism seniors on their NYC media tour. We hosted the group at LinkedIn the next day to show what it looks like to build a media career in tech. The short answer to that question? No. The long answer… When I was applying to jobs, I didn't even know roles like mine existed. I was targeting traditional reporter positions because that's what I understood. Even now when I explain what I do, I usually get: “Wait, I didn't know that was a job." So when I landed in this role, everything felt new. And because it didn't match anything I had in my head, I kept trying to make it make sense. Trying to fit it into a version of a career I thought I was supposed to have. Trying to connect dots before they were ready to be connected. And that's what made me hesitate. When opportunities didn't immediately "fit," I second-guessed them. I questioned if I was capable. I kept getting in my own way. It wasn't until I stopped trying to force everything to make sense and just leaned in that things started to click. I got to: Host a podcast. I was convinced I'd fail since I had no experience — but it ended up building my confidence more than anything else I've worked on. Help launch a product. It felt more technical than anything I'd done before — but it introduced me to an incredibly talented group of people I learned so much from. Grow a community around my content. I was anxious to post at first, especially on video — but it's led to a community that shows up IRL (photo below from a recent event hosted by Natalie). My advice to those soon-to-be grads? You don't need to have it all figured you, you just need to leave room to figure it out. Have direction but experiment as much as you can. Sometimes the best parts are the ones you never could have predicted. Add to the list: ending up on the same team as Alessandra, who I met eight years ago at school. Shoutout to her.

Morten Rand-Hendriksen reacted on thisMorten Rand-Hendriksen reacted on thisIt's Trans Day of Visibility. 🏳️⚧️ Here's to a future where we can be visible without fear. I was recently asked by a student, nervous and about to graduate, what it’s like to be an out trans, nonbinary professional. They quietly shared that they were trans, afraid to come out, and unsure if it was safe to be professionally visible as who they are. That question stayed with me because the fear behind it isn’t misplaced. Trans and nonbinary people continue to face disproportionately high rates of harassment and violence, and across North America we’re seeing a wave of policies and rhetoric that challenge our basic human rights. According to HRC, more than 75 anti-LGBTQ+ laws have been passed this year alone. Many of those directly target the trans community. So when I’m asked if it’s safe to be visible, the answer needs nuance. For that student, it will require an incredible amount of labour to decide if visibility is worth the risk. For me, it has been. I also recognize the privilege that has supported my safety, and I’m deeply grateful for the friends, colleagues, and clients who have shown up with care and allyship. All of this to say, visibility shouldn’t require courage. My hope for trans people on this Trans Day of Visibility is that one day we can simply exist without fear.
