Someone suggested recently that I should explain the difference between irresponsible journalism – which is the unfortunate standard – and what we are doing at BIG-Media.ca. So, here are the Top 7 Problems with the News Media Industry (and what we are doing to make things better): 1. Sensationalism – our news media rivals are focused on the SIZE of the audience, whereas we focus on the INTELLIGENCE of the audience. While the other guys feed you a non-stop diet of shocking and scandalous material, we deliver facts and logic so you understand what is ACTUALLY going on in the world. 2. Quoting experts – the wonders of the Internet and AI bring journalists the opportunity to – with one simple online search – find an expert who will lend expertise to “prove” any theory. On the other hand, BIG Media works with skilled researchers who dig up the most relevant facts and data, interpret their findings logically, and present with full transparency. 3. Competence – conventionally trained news journalists rarely have the expertise in data and science that would allow them to properly scrutinize information provided by their sources. Our writers are mostly accomplished scientists, engineers, and mathematicians who recognize the complexity of the issues and offer more accurate reports. 4. 24-hour news cycle – there simply are not enough amazing stories happening every day, so media outlets that produce a lot of content daily are under great pressure to generate shocking material to keep you coming back. That pressure is inversely correlated with journalistic integrity. At BIG Media, editorial contributors understand that timeliness is important, but accuracy is paramount. 5. Data mining and algorithms give us highly customized content … which is why a lot of us believe that we are quite knowledgeable about certain topics, even though we are usually exposed to material that reinforces narrow-minded bias. BIG Media does not use these tactics and provides the same accurate coverage to everyone. 6. Bias – be it because of edicts from upper management or partisan editors and reporters, our media rivals pick sides. Evidence-based journalism seems to have gone the way of the dodo. It is impossible to eliminate all bias, but BIG Media's high-integrity contributors, tight editorial guidelines, and lofty standards minimize bias and spin while maximizing practical knowledge. 7. Follow the money – virtually all news groups serve the hand that pays them. If they accept advertising, they focus on driving eyeballs to the advertisers to keep revenue flowing (hence sensationalism). If they accept government funding, they are inevitably biased toward the party paying the bills. At BIG Media, to preserve editorial objectivity, we do not accept advertising or government funding. Every year, the Association of Registered Graphic Designers (RGD), Design Professionals of Canada (DesCan) and Société des designers graphiques du Québec get together to review our joint Code of Ethics. This document provides a framework for practicing design as ethically as possible. It's a wide reaching document that covers everything from working with clients, to our responsibilities to society and the environment, competitions and fees, intellectual property and so more. This year, when we sat down to review the document, there was only one word on our lips: AI. (Yeah, yeah it's technically an acronym, I know.) This AI-related update offers guidance for designers on the incorporation of AI into their work. These changes reflect AI's growing impact on the industry and the need to address concerns about transparency, data ethics and fair compensation for creators. We've purposefully kept the rules and best practices vague in an attempt to keep them relevant as the technology continues to evolve.
