We must stand together and be strong! This morning 34 major Canadian asset owners representing $53 Billion in assets have called out 🇨🇦 Banks and other institutional investors to uphold their net-zero commitments. Canadian Pension funds, university endowments, philanthropic foundations, family offices and many other asset owners are concerned that Canadian banks (CIBC BMO TD Scotiabank National Bank of Canada RBC are exiting out from the Net Zero Banking Alliance. We need steady leadership in the transition to a net-zero economy. Addressing climate risk and aligning capital with net-zero goals is essential for both a livable planet and long-term economic stability. It makes Canada more competitive. Through Trottier Family Foundation, we are urging financial institutions to maintain their leadership by setting science-based targets, uphold transparency, and align investments with a sustainable future. Today the Government of Canada announced the launch of the Blended Finance Accelerator for Fund Managers (A4FM). Funded by Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada and implemented by Convergence, the A4FM program aims to strengthen the capacity of Canadian and global fund and asset managers to participate in blended finance by equipping them with tailored training, catalytic grant funding, and acceleration assistance required to structure and launch blended finance solutions. The program will address the unique needs of institutional asset managers and emerging fund managers. Canada has made several attempts to create a national securities regulator since the 1930s. All have failed. Now, two organizations that represent investment managers are urging provincial securities regulators to seize a historic moment and tear down interprovincial trade barriers by harmonizing their securities regulations. The Government of Canada welcomes the #IMF’s Financial Sector Assessment Program five-year review of Canada. It finds that Canada has a mature and resilient financial sector, and a comprehensive oversight framework at both federal and provincial levels. The IMF specifically highlights the robustness of the crisis management framework during successive shocks in recent years and the effective oversight of financial institutions including banks, large pension funds, and insurance companies. https://ow.ly/wY8j50WyMxk

From Scotiabank CEO Scott Thomson this morning: "Mr. Thomson said that the bank is introducing an energy supply ratio, which would track the financing of fossil fuels compared with investment in alternative energy sources." Combine this commitment with 37% support for the publication of the ratio by investors at CIBC late last week (the highest result for a climate resolution at a Canadian Bank in history) and it is clear that this metric is becoming an industry-wide decision useful ratio for the financial sector to track progress of their financing of the energy transition. It must be noted that LNG is considered a fossil fuel in all methodologies for the energy supply finance ratio. https://lnkd.in/gd4-uCRK
