Canada – Manitoba: Provincial Sales Tax on Cloud Computing Services from January 1, 2026 Starting January 1, 2026, Manitoba will significantly expand the scope of services subject to Retail Sales Tax (RST). The Manitoba Department of Finance has confirmed that cloud computing services supplied to customers located in the province will become taxable, regardless of where the underlying servers are hosted. 🔸 What is changing 🔹 Cloud-based services will be subject to Manitoba RST when supplied to customers whose place of business or residence is in the province 🔹 The change applies even if the servers are located outside of Manitoba 🔹 This marks a clear shift from the previous framework, where remote access to out-of-province servers was generally out of scope 🔸 Services in scope 🔹 SaaS Software as a Service 🔹 IaaS Infrastructure as a Service 🔹 PaaS Platform as a Service 🔹 Access to software installed on remote servers without local downloading 🔸 What remains unchanged 🔹 Packaged or prewritten software has already been taxable under RST 🔹 Custom software developed to meet the specific needs of a single customer remains exempt 🔸 Place of supply implications 🔹 Taxability is determined by the customer’s location in Manitoba, not by server location 🔹 This aligns Manitoba with broader Canadian and international trends in taxing digital services at destination 🔸 Compliance expectations for non-resident providers 🔹 Non-resident cloud and digital service providers should assess whether they exceed federal or provincial sales tax thresholds 🔹 Once registered, providers must charge, collect, and remit Manitoba RST on taxable supplies 🔹 Ongoing compliance will be closely monitored through advanced online sales tax tracking systems This reform represents a major shift in compliance for cloud and digital service providers supplying Manitoba customers. AI is no longer just changing how Canadians work — it is beginning to reshape how they think about their careers. A new study from Toronto-based Borderless AI found that 46% of employed Canadians say AI has already impacted their long-term career growth, with many workers actively building new skills around the technology. But the shift is not being felt evenly. Younger workers, university-educated Canadians, and those navigating a tighter labour market are feeling the pressure most acutely — even as traditional concerns like wages, job security, flexibility, and career advancement remain top of mind. 📧 Phishing Emails: Why We Still Fall for Them (and Why Retraining Matters) Despite ongoing training efforts, phishing emails continue to succeed—not because employees don’t know better, but because in the rush of a normal workday, it’s easy to let our guard down. Just last quarter, several companies experienced breaches that started with a simple click on a well-crafted phishing email. These weren’t cases of ignorance. In fact, most of the employees involved had completed security awareness training. So what went wrong? 👉 Complacency: Over time, people get used to “seeing” phishing attempts and begin to assume they’ll always recognize one. 👉 Context matters: A message from a “colleague” about an urgent task can bypass critical thinking—especially under pressure. 👉 Attackers adapt: Phishing tactics are constantly evolving. What seemed obvious six months ago may now look legitimate. 🧠 Why Retraining Is Critical Cybersecurity isn’t a one-and-done effort. Just like CPR or fire drills, repetition builds instinct.
