What is your take on this chamber article? Is Your Board Sabotaging Your Success? Is your board simply putting too much on you (and your team)?   Chambers thrive when staff are focused and strategic, not buried under a never-ending list of programs, projects, and events.   Yet too often, boards push for “more” without realizing the toll it takes.   Too much is simply too much.   When chambers try to do everything, staff burn out, members and volunteers get fatigued, and marketing channels become a blur of constant promotion.   The result?   Instead of building impact, you’re stuck in survival mode always rushing to the next thing. Smart chambers know that focus is the key.   The 80-20 rule applies here: 20% of activities drive 80% of the results. By narrowing your scope, you give yourself the space to deliver quality, market effectively, and create programs that truly matter.   If this feels like an uphill battle, make this challenge part of your strategic planning process. Have an honest discussion on all the things the staff is being ask to do.    When the board sees the long list of events and activities that are piled on you, your staff, and volunteers and they come to understand that it's not sustainable, it’s easier to shift from “busy” to “strategic.”   That way, the decision to streamline isn’t just yours, it becomes the board’s commitment too.   The best chambers aren’t the busiest.   They’re the most focused. Conquer Conflict Like a Super Bowl Pro! I was speaking to a client earlier this week about the benefits of managing conflict head-on, instead of avoiding it.  We’ve done a really good job of “over loading” the meaning of conflict that as soon as it hits most people’s minds, nothing but negativity consumes it. There are many reasons for this however, one of the biggest reasons is that people are not trained nor speak about how to manage conflict in a healthy way. If difficult conversations scare you, here's your secret weapon, my clients use this strategy all of the time. The Conflict Resolution Pyramid. This framework helps you navigate ANY situation, regardless of communication styles or personalities. Step 1. Stay calm & actively listen: Let them enjoy the process of talking to you. Deep breaths, and active listening go a long way, no pre-empting what you think they will say next in your mind. At the root of many conflicts, is a person who wants to be heard and their thoughts or feelings validated (no, that does not mean you have to agree with them). Step 2.   Acknowledge & inquire: Validate their feelings and ask open-ended questions, never assume anything. ️ After asking questions, close your mouth (AKA “shut up”) and stop speaking.  This is where most people go wrong, they jump in and speak (often in a defensive manner and tone) as soon as they hear something that they don’t like or disagree with. DO NOT DO THAT ANYMORE. Step 3. Focus on solutions, not being right. Work together to find win-win outcomes and affirm if you’ve been able to allay their fears/solve the issue. In 8 years of accompanying professionals in landing their next role, there's one thing that pulls back job hunters without them even noticing it: the best strategies are generally the counter-intuitive ones. And branding is no exception: most job seekers broaden the range of roles they position themselves for thinking this will increase their chances. It does not. “I can do everything” is not a positioning strategy. Fitting everywhere makes you stand out no where - especially in competitive markets. Soft skills matter when leading an organization, so plan to spend focused time discussing, implementing, and practicing each behavioural standard, one at a time. This gives prominence to each one individually, which will clarify how important they are.
