When design moves from Figma into code, a key piece of the puzzle that still needs to be solved is collaboration. Figma works well because collaboration is the default. Everyone can show up and have an opinion without understanding how things are built. Collaboration is also spatial. You point, circle, comment, react. It’s loose, imprecise, and very human. New tooling will need to be build for how all of this will work in code. Git is a starting point- version control, history, diffs, branches etc. Most people don’t reason in diffs, and a pull request is a bad place to answer “does this feel right?” I'm curious what else has worked for folks so far?

Designers are no longer “shipping pixels” and hoping devs match the vision. This week, Cursor launched Visual Editor — an AI-powered space where design and code finally live together. Here’s why this is a big deal for UX/product designers: • You can shape UI and behavior in the same place, instead of bouncing between Figma, tickets, and dev handoff docs. • You can ask AI in plain language to adjust layout, spacing, states, or flows — and see those changes reflected in working code. • You reduce the classic “dev vs design” gap because everyone iterates in one shared environment. Imagine this workflow as a UX designer: You sketch a flow, open Visual Editor, and say: “Make this checkout layout more compact, add a clear hierarchy for primary vs secondary actions, and optimize for mobile first.” The AI updates the interface and underlying code, and you co-edit from there instead of recreating everything manually. This is where UX is clearly heading: Less time redlining, more time thinking in systems, flows, and outcomes. Designers who are comfortable working closer to code + AI will have a serious edge in the next few years. Great UX isn’t just pixels — it’s people. Strong design skills will get your ideas on the screen. But if you can’t communicate those ideas, defend them thoughtfully, and collaborate across teams, your impact will be limited. The foundation of these “soft skills” isn’t talking — it’s active listening. When you truly hear what stakeholders, developers, and users are saying (and not saying), you can connect the dots, uncover hidden needs, and build trust. Great design happens in dialogue, not in isolation. And active listening? That’s where the dialogue starts.

Wednesday's UX in AZ Workshop I ran on using Claude to design without touching Figma went pretty well, considering half the group were new to Claude/LLMs and even Figma, while half were Claude Code power users. But one element of my presentation was novel to everyone in the room. Using design system .md files inspired by patterns seen widely on the internet. All of the online discourse I've seen about designers using Claude Code has to do with building personal sites/portfolios, personal projects, building design tools like shaders/animation tools, or building Figma plugins. Strangely, no one else seems to be discussing using Firecrawl or other tools to find sites whose visual pattens you admire, scraping the JSON data and using LLMs to turn that into .md files that can be used as proto-design systems/component libraries such that you're not using system defaults. My motivation behind figuring this out has been to explicitly avoid the use of AI Slop like Inter or purple gradients when building personal projects with Cursor/Claude Code, while still being able to build fast/without the errors of MCP. The first time an exec ignored my UX research, I realized this one thing. Early in my career, I thought good research spoke for itself. We did the work: • Solid methodology • Clear insights • Well-designed slides • Confident recommendations The exec nodded politely… And then made the opposite decision. At first, I was frustrated. Then defensive. Then confused. But eventually, I realized the real issue wasn’t the research. 👉 I hadn’t connected it to what they cared about. Executives don’t ignore research because they dislike insights. They ignore it when: • The impact isn’t obvious • The risk isn’t framed • The decision tradeoffs aren’t clear • The business consequences aren’t explicit I was answering interesting questions instead of decision-critical ones. That moment changed how I approach research forever. I’ve seen a lot of posts talking about Jenny Wen’s take on designers needing to learn how to code. As the Head of Design at Claude, her perspective that the "traditional process is dead" has clearly touched a nerve. I’m not here to take a philosophical side. I think there is a massive amount of value you can create in AI without writing a single line of syntax, and I’ll show you exactly how I’m doing that in tomorrow’s post. 👀 But look at the gap in my GitHub activity. For most of the last year, it’s a sea of grey. That was me staying in my lane, playing the role of "just a designer." I had lost the passion for actual software development. Then February 2026 hit. The access I’ve had to AI platforms over the last month hasn't just made me faster, it has reignited a passion for building that I thought was gone. I didn't suddenly become a 10x developer. The tools simply removed the technical debt that made me quit years ago. Whether you decide to code is a tactical business choice. For me, being back in the IDE is the fastest path to shipping. Who said designers can’t be builders? Here’s how I did it. I come from a UI/UX background, and empathy was always my strong suit. I didn’t just care about how interfaces looked I was deeply curious about why users behaved the way they did, how businesses actually ran, and what really happened behind the designs we shipped. During projects, I often found myself asking questions like: 👉 What happens after this screen goes live? 👉 How does this flow connect to operations, marketing, or sales? That curiosity stayed with me. Later, I joined a masterclass at GrowthSchool. Not to “switch careers,” but to understand the bigger picture. That’s where I was exposed to a wide range of things: AI tools, workflows, and ways technology could support business processes, not just interfaces. Automation came into the picture after that. One tool in particular caught my attention which is Make.com At first, it felt very different from design. No frames. No components. Just logic, data, and flow. But surprisingly, it clicked. because it wasn’t that different from designing user journeys. It was just systems instead of screens. I didn’t start big. I started practical. One of the first real projects I built was an AI-powered blog system: 👉 It takes a topic as input 👉 Generates long-form content using AI 👉 Optimizes it for SEO 👉 Automatically creates FAQs 👉 Helps structure content in a way that supports backlinks and discoverability What earlier took hours across tools was now one structured flow. Later, I built a custom mailing and ad-personalization bot: 👉 Instead of sending generic campaigns 👉 It tailored messages based on user data 👉 Personalized ads and emails for each customer 👉 Reduced manual effort while improving relevance That’s when things became clear. UI/UX taught me how users think. Automation taught me how systems behave. I didn’t stop being a designer. I just started building beyond the screen. And I’m still learning, experimenting, breaking things, improving flows. If you’re a designer who’s curious about how things actually work behind your designs, automation might not be a detour. The flaw with all the Claude to Figma discus isn't that Claude is bad at design or Figma not being good enough. It's that it's creating an unnecessarily complex workflow for designers. Prompt in Claude, go back to Figma to see the output, return to Claude to make changes, and bounce back to Figma to confirm. It's exciting. Fairly. But, we've had more tools in the past 6 months than there ever was in the last ten years. What makes design design is the freedom to think in systems, visuals, colors, and the human experience all at once. Claude reduces it to one. Systems. We'll have a prototype in 24hrs. But, it'll be about same thing a thousand and one people have. And some say you gotta have taste. True. But, taste isn't supposed to come behind systems. They're supposed to be connected. And if the design session is spent prompting Claude to get it to work first, making the business case for spending another week to refine the visuals becomes another fight designers have to win.

Twenty years ago, I designed my first “real” interface. I thought it was brilliant, clean lines, perfect gradients, pixel-perfect spacing. The users? They hated it. That’s when I learned my first (and most important) lesson: Design isn’t about what looks good to me, it’s about what works for them. Two decades later, here are the 6 principles I still lean on every day: 1️⃣ Empathy First – Listen more than you talk. Real insights come from real people. 2️⃣ Simplicity Creates Clarity – If you need a manual to explain it, it’s too complicated. 3️⃣ Design is a Team Sport – Good ideas get better when you share them. 4️⃣ Purpose Over Trends – A “cool” design that solves nothing… isn’t that cool. 5️⃣ Learn, Unlearn, Relearn – The best designers stay curious, not comfortable. 6️⃣ Impact Through Iteration – Small, steady improvements beat one big redesign. If I could tell my younger designer self one thing, it would be this: 💡 Fall in love with the problem, not your first idea. What’s the first design lesson you learned the hard way?
