Refugia means an area supporting natural flora and fauna that is resilient to the pressures facing the surrounding region, natural or man-made. Strategist Eric Turcotte joined a round table discussion about projecting this concept onto the natural urban landscape in Issue 68 of Ontario Association of Landscape Architects (OALA)’s Ground Magazine with Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA)'s Steven Heuchert, Alexander Zeller of Arcadis, Kim Stratham of the City of Toronto Urban Forestry, co-moderated by Glyn Bowerman and Shahrzad Nezafati (🇨🇦).

We are thrilled that this morning, "one of the absolute best applications that we've had the pleasure to receive" (Councillor Amber Morley) was approved by Etobicoke York Community Council. The 21-25 Windsor proposal for Diamante Development Corporation and DeZen Realty just north of Mimico Station features two transit-oriented market residential towers to start, but also includes: - A standalone 7-storey non-profit supportive housing building operated by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, greatly expanding their current operations on site and providing a mix of 124 emergency shelter beds and supportive dwelling units. - A standalone 14-storey affordable co-op rental housing building - New office space - A full size, private daycare - A publicly accessible open POPS space near the transit station. - A publicly accessible mid-block connection and driveway, and - A public park meeting all parkland requirements and with the potential for further expansion through acquisition. 🚀 Curtner Urban Leadership Program – Session 7 Recap The seventh session of the Curtner Urban Leadership Program took place on Friday, April 25th, 2025, at the YZD Experience Centre in North York. Titled "All the Places You’ll Go!", the session explored how thoughtful design and innovation contribute to creating successful communities, workplaces, and public spaces — emphasizing the need to be both intentional and adaptable. The day began with registration, networking, and a leadership keynote from Derek Goring, CEO of Northcrest Developments, moderated by Nicole Lechter, Assurance Senior Manager at RSM Canada. Participants then delivered their group project presentations, engaging in productive critique and dialogue as part of the program’s ongoing development workshops. In the afternoon, attendees were introduced to the Downsview Framework Plan and Northcrest’s Hangar District Plan through a presentation by Emily Reisman (Urban Strategies) and See-Yin Lim (DTAH). Congratulations to Huu-ay-aht First Nations and the Forum Asset Management on reaching this significant milestone. It was a pleasure to work alongside Christine Fang-Denissov and our great team at Urban Strategies Inc. in supporting Huu-ay-aht realizing their vision of the Nations’ ḥahuułi.
Some exciting news to celebrate! Last week, the Huu-ay-aht Executive Council fully adopted the Huu-ay-aht Framework Plan - a design and engagement project led by Urban Strategies Inc.! Our team had the privilege of working closely with the Huu-ay-aht First Nations (and their development partner Forum Asset Management) to understand the rich history of the Nation's extensive ḥaḥuułi (traditional territory), including the 8,200 hectares of Treaty Settlement Lands they have full ownership and jurisdiction over. Through close collaboration and extensive engagement, we helped create a 30-year plan that embodies the Nation’s sacred principles of ʔiisaak (respect), ʔuuʔałuk (taking care of), and hišuk ma c̕awak (everything is connected), and shape a physical plan that supports community-building and fosters long-term economic opportunities. The adoption of the Huu-ay-aht Framework Plan marks a significant and meaningful milestone for the Nation and its citizens. We are truly honoured to have contributed to this important work. John Jack, Aly Damji, Dayna Gilbert, Christine Fang-Denissov, Sirous Ghanbarzadeh, Stuart Dow, Josh Reiniger.
