If you didn't catch our newsletter today, we unpacked a trend that’s way too familiar: women writing apology essays just to ask for time off, to reschedule a meeting or to explain why they can't make an event. Spoiler alert: it’s not because they’re insecure. Women are taught they have to earn accommodation and that they'll be penalized for asking. This is a trained response that develops when you’ve worked under micromanagers, navigated toxic team dynamics, or walked on eggshells for fear of being labeled flaky, unserious, or uncommitted. How can we make it easier for women to ask for what they need? 💡 Be the example; use your PTO and set the precedent that time off is okay 💡 Model grace; respond without shock, guilt-tripping, or suspicion when someone asks for a reasonable accommodation. 💡 Praise boundary-setting, emotional intelligence, and self-advocacy the same way commitment is praised 💡 Be the kind of leader who builds trust, not fear 💡 Normalize life happening Missed it? What’s a Tech Girl Walk? It’s a healthy, outdoorsy way to connect or reconnect with other women in tech or tech adjacent roles. 🗓️When do we have them? The last Sunday of the month every month until November. ⏰ How long is the walk? It is usually one hour long starting at 2:00 pm but if we take less time or if the conversations are 🔥 we have an extra hour to converge upon a bistro or coffee shop. 🏃♀️Who can attend? While this initiative was brought forward by Toast, you don’t have to be a member. This is for our community to create a sense of belonging for all our women in tech or innovation. 🏋🏿♀️How fit do I need to be? The Tech Girl Walks are meant to be accessible walks at a conversational pace. We have walkers who lead the pack and walkers who bring up the rear. We usually stop once or twice for pictures and to ensure no one gets left behind. The walks are roughly 0.85 kms to 1.5 kms depending on the course the group elects to take. Sometimes we do the river valley stairs. See you next walk??
