At Sunnybrook, our vision is to invent the future of health care.

About us

From our beginnings as a hospital for Canadian veterans, Sunnybrook has flourished into a fully affiliated teaching hospital of the University of Toronto, evolving to meet the needs of our growing community. Today, with 1.3 million patient visits each year, Sunnybrook has established itself across three campuses and is home to Canada's largest trauma centre. Sunnybrook's groundbreaking research changes the way patients are treated around the world. Our over 200 scientists and clinician-scientists conduct more than $100 million of breakthrough research each year. Tomorrow, we will discover ways to treat the untreatable. Our mission is to care for our patients and their families when it matters most. Our vision is to invent the future of health care. Our values are: excellence, collaboration, accountability, respect and engagement. See Sunnybrook's ambitious plan to invent the future of health care: sunnybrook.ca/strategicplan

  • Sunnybrook experts are helping monitor and respond to the current Ebola outbreak in East Africa. Drs. Rob Fowler, Neill Adhikari and Adrienne Chan have cared for patients on the frontlines of previous Ebola outbreaks and are now sharing what people need to know about the current situation, including how the virus spreads, why this outbreak is different and the risk to North America. While the risk of spread in Canada remains very low, the team says strong public health measures, early detection and supportive care remain critical. • “As a millennial, I believe it’s never too early to start thinking about the legacy you want to leave. Even a small gesture can create meaningful change for future generations,” says Tyler Ward. Inspired by the incredible care and access to a vital clinical trial his father received at Sunnybrook’s Odette Cancer Centre, Tyler chose to leave a gift in his Will to Sunnybrook. This is his way of ensuring more patients benefit from early diagnoses, innovative treatments, and brighter outcomes. • David Poynton’s gift to Sunnybrook honours his late parents, Jack and Judy Poynton, who proudly dedicated over 70 years combined as Sunnybrook volunteers. After visiting his family cemetery in Perth, Ontario, David uncovered a history of ancestors who served as Veterans, educators, and community volunteers. This legacy of service inspired him to establish the Jack and Judy Poynton Volunteer Resources Fund at Sunnybrook, as well as create a legacy of his own - a future gift through his estate which will help ensure Sunnybrook’s long-term sustainability. This #HeartFailureAwarenessMonth, we want you to know the signs and symptoms of heart failure. Heart failure happens when the heart becomes too weak or stiff to pump blood properly. Symptoms can include shortness of breath, coughing and swelling. More than 750,000 Canadians live with the condition. At Sunnybrook’s Heart Function Clinic, the team helps patients manage heart failure through education, lifestyle changes and medications that improve outcomes. Dr. Stephanie Poon, Medical Director of Sunnybrook’s Heart Failure Program, explains the signs to watch for and why early diagnosis and treatment matter. “Know the symptoms — and get checked early.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/e9qsZDHC

  • This #NationalPhysiotherapyMonth, we’re celebrating the many ways physiotherapists (PTs) help patients move, recover and regain independence across the hospital. Physiotherapy is about far more than injury rehabilitation. In hospitals, physiotherapy professionals are critical members of the care team, supporting patients through complex surgeries, critical illness, neurological conditions, cancer care, cardiac recovery, trauma, aging and more. From helping patients take their first steps after intensive care to improving mobility, function and quality of life, physiotherapy professionals play an essential role at every stage of recovery. Learn more about the different types of physiotherapists across our hospital and the impact they make every day: https://lnkd.in/e2Kh2F4j
