Community organizations across Canada are seeing a growing demand for financial help services due to the complexity many clients face. During discussions at the Ottawa Resilient Futures Event, participants highlighted several barriers affecting the communities they serve: • Limited access to banking services in rural and remote regions • Digital access challenges for clients without reliable internet or devices • Language barriers and financial terminology that can be difficult to navigate • Lack of identification required to access financial services or benefits • Rising costs of living, housing insecurity, and growing reliance on high-fee lending services Addressing these barriers requires community-based approaches that meet people where they are. This month, members of the Resilient Futures network gathered in Ottawa at the National Arts Center, and virtually, for a convening focused on advancing financial inclusion across Canada. Prosper Canada was proud to host an event that brought together community partners, sector leaders and government representatives. The day opened with a land acknowledgement from Simon Brascoupe, whose reflections helped highlight the importance of building respectful and inclusive systems. Through networking, presentations, and peer learning sessions, participants explored key issues, including barriers to tax filing, hosting tax clinics, supporting priority populations through inclusive service delivery, improving access to benefits and emerging concerns around economic abuse, consumer protection and the growing need for financial education.

On Monday, CCFWE submitted its recommendations to the government on the Code of Conduct on the Prevention of Economic Abuse. We emphasized the need for a survivor-driven approach, stronger mandatory protections, and a shift toward not only responding to economic abuse, but for financial institutions to proactively preventing economic abuse. Our submission outlines practical measures banks can implement to make financial services safer and more equitable for those experiencing economic abuse, drawing on best practices from Canada, Australia, and the UK.
