I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Alexander Josephson, architect and co-founder of the Toronto-based studio PARTISANS, for The Artist’s Voice. In our conversation, Alex reflects on how creativity shaped him from an early age, from drawing and pottery as a child to discovering architecture as a path that felt entirely his own. Encouraged by his mother to explore his imagination, supported by inspiring art and science teachers, and guided by a father who urged him to follow his heart, Alex chose a profession he initially knew little about, perhaps precisely because of that. He also shares how studying in Rome deepened his appreciation for Italian craftsmanship, material intelligence, and architectural heritage, influences that continue to inform his work today. With PARTISANS, Alex and his team aim to realize better cities by innovating at the frontlines of ideas, culture, form, materials, and typologies.
