By 2050, it is projected that we will need to be removing 5-10 GT of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to avoid the worst impacts from global warming. In our latest article, we explore how rivers are one of the most overlooked pieces of global climate infrastructure, and how CarbonRun, a Panache portfolio company, is working to enhance their natural carbon removal processes. Restoring river alkalinity can do more than repair ecosystems. It can enable measurable, durable carbon removal with a clear pathway to scale. CarbonRun's approach builds on decades of river restoration science, now paired with real-time monitoring, carbon accounting, and third-party verification. The result is a system that works within existing watersheds to convert CO₂ into bicarbonate and store it in the ocean for tens of thousands of years.
