The Ontario Bar Association is the voice of the legal profession.

About us

The Ontario Bar Association is a branch of the Canadian Bar Association, an organization of lawyers formed to provide support by the profession to the profession so that it may render better service to its members and the public. This is accomplished by both education and representation to government on topics of current concern. The Ontario Bar Association provides lawyers with opportunities to become more efficient and effective, to further their professional education and to keep abreast of current developments within the profession, nationally and provincially. Membership in the Canadian Bar Association entitles lawyers to participate in these educational programs at a lower cost than non-members. In addition, members can take an active role in law reform and law amendment, both provincially and federally. Meetings of the national organization, the provincial organization and the individual Sections offer the opportunity to meet other members of the profession from all parts of the country with like interests on a basis afforded in no other manner. The Canadian Bar Association has been in existence since 1896 and was incorporated April 15, 1921 while the Ontario Branch has been in existence since 1907 and was incorporated on April 22, 1985. Back from Toronto after several meaningful days with the Ontario Bar Association. Our board met and the conversations were substantive and forward-looking. The Toronto Lawyers Association Gala was a celebration of excellence and collegiality. OBA Council showcased the strength of our provincial voice. And the election speeches highlighted just how much leadership capacity exists within the Ontario Bar Association. It’s encouraging to see so many lawyers committed not just to practice, but to stewardship of the profession.

Another wonderful Ontario Bar Association Council in the books, complete with an update from Ontario Superior Court of Justice Chief Justice Morawetz. His Honour also spoke about the importance of protecting the Rule of Law and how much the Court values its partnership with the OBA. Collaboration on justice initiatives with our partners in the sector is such an important part of our mandate. We very much appreciate the time the Chief took to speak to us. Today also marked the opening of the OBA board elections for the 2026-27 term that will start Sept 1. It was fabulous to hear the candidates’ speeches. While I know from experience how nerve-wracking those contested elections are, they are vital to the health of our organization. Thank you to everyone who put their name on a ballot - engaged volunteers are the lifeblood of this association so win or lose, please know how much we value your contributions to the OBA.
