Did you know that May 20 is Clinical Trials Day? Celebrated globally, it marks the anniversary of James Lind’s ground-breaking 1747 study on scurvy — widely considered one of the first randomized clinical trials. Since then, clinical research has continued to shape the future of medicine, public health, and improve lives around the world.
Today, on Clinical Trials Day, we recognize the researchers, clinicians, community organizations, healthcare institutions, people with lived experience, and partners whose work helps drive innovation in healthcare and in new diagnostic testing. 🌍
At REACH Nexus and MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions at St. Michael's Hospital, we’re proud to be part of that progress. Over the last five years, we’ve led and supported clinical trials that helped secure approval for 5 HIV and syphilis point-of-care tests in Canada — including Canada’s first HIV self-test and, more recently, the OraQuick HIV Self-Test, Canada’s first oral swab HIV self-test. ⚕️
Clinical trials are about more than research — they’re about people. Today is an opportunity to celebrate everyone who participates in, supports, reviews, and helps move clinical research forward. Their contributions are helping create more accessible, equitable, and community-centered healthcare solutions. 👏
