We’ve been designing reliable environmental monitoring solutions for extreme environments for 40 years.

About us

FTS, an AEM brand, was founded in 1980 to address the demanding weather information requirements of the world’s premier forest fire management agencies. The fire community’s strong requirements for rock-solid dependability and fast, trouble-free operation shaped FTS’s early product development efforts and helped create a corporate culture dedicated to meeting the practical needs of its customers. Today, our products are measuring, recording, and analyzing changes in watersheds, national forests, nationwide weather system networks, supply streams for drinking water reservoirs, the waters of fish and wildlife refuges and many other environments. Our monitoring stations reflect three decades of technological advancement focused on our goal of designing and manufacturing the world’s most reliable, simplest to use, and simplest to maintain systems. Our headquarters, research and design lab, and factory are located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, with a branch office in Blaine, Washington. From here, we supply products and services around the world, including North America, South America, Asia, and Europe. FTS stations have proven themselves under the most demanding conditions, from the most remote northern regions of Canada to the sun beaten, wind-blown salt and sand of the Mexican coast. Our customers include over 50 government agencies in the United States, Canada, and Mexico: customers who demand the highest levels of reliability, accuracy, and operational effectiveness.

A rapidly strengthening El Niño could become one of the defining climate signals of the summer season. In AEM’s upcoming 2026 Summer Outlook webinar, our meteorological team will unpack what this and other climate signals could mean for specific regions across North America. 🔎 Where could heat become more persistent? 🔎 Where could precipitation extremes become a concern? 🔎 What could it all mean for drought, water supply, wildfire potential, smoke, and air quality? Join us for a practical look at the weather risks, regional patterns, and planning considerations that could matter most this summer. Register here: https://lnkd.in/ez6XWVGJ

In recognition of Texas Flood Awareness Week, this edition of #WildWendesday comes to us courtesy of AEM's very own Christianna Covello. She captured this video of field crews preparing another #flood alerting station to protect Texans against flash flooding. This is a small glimpse into the many ways that the AEM Field Services team is working to keep Texas communities safe under the guidance of leaders like Barry Fulfer, CFM and Dana Macy Troyer. Special thanks to Jason Harrington for bringing this great video to our attention. #FEWS #FloodEarlyWarningSystem #FloodAwarenessWeek #Texas

#HeatSafetyWeek is a reminder that extreme heat is no longer an occasional summer concern. It is becoming a frequent operational reality. The world’s 10 warmest years on record have all occurred in the past decade. And with El Niño likely to develop in the coming months, summer heat risks may be amplified again this year. For organizations responsible for worker safety, student and athlete safety, outdoor events, transportation, utilities, or community preparedness, the question is not whether #heatsafety will matter this summer. It is whether decision-makers will have the outlook, monitoring, and guidance they need before conditions become dangerous. Register now for our upcoming Summer Weather Outlook for North America, where we will break down expected temperature patterns, precipitation risks, severe weather potential, and other conditions that could shape operational decisions this summer. https://lnkd.in/g7ZjbURx

Some of the most important lessons in #publicsafety come from reflecting on decisions in the wake of tragedy. But it is just as important to learn when the worst outcomes are avoided. On May 6, a #tornado destroyed nearly all 26 trailers in Wash Mobile Home Park in Bogue Chitto, #Mississippi. Thankfully, no fatalities were reported. One factor appears to have helped: some residents reportedly evacuated to sturdier nearby buildings about 10 minutes before the tornado hit. For public safety officials, situations like this point to a larger challenge: different populations may need different amounts of time, different instructions, and different triggers to take protective action. For many households, a tornado warning may mean moving quickly to a basement, hallway, closet, or interior room. For others, like the residents of Wash Mobile Home Park, it may mean leaving for a nearby office, shop, community building, or other sturdier structure. For still others, it may mean accounting for transportation, mobility limitations, language access, or caregiving responsibilities. That is not one #decisionmoment. It is several. And each one has to be designed around the actions that each person actually needs to take. This is where the details of early warning system design become critical. Effective warnings require understanding the various risk profiles of those who are exposed, what actions they need to take, how long those actions require, and how warnings and drills should be structured around those realities. In this excerpt from AEM’s #BehindtheForecast podcast, meteorologist Matthew Cappucci explains more about why one-size-fits-all does not work as an approach to severe weather communication.

Climate Central, Inc. reports that hourly rainfall rates have increased across many major cities. The heaviest downpours have intensified in every major region of the country. And stormwater systems remain underprepared, earning a D in the American Society of Civil Engineers’ latest infrastructure report card. Together, these trends point to a sobering reality: many communities are facing greater #floodrisk than their existing systems were built to manage. We see the consequences play out all too often. Roads flood quickly. Low-lying areas fill fast. Conditions that seemed manageable moments earlier become life-threatening. What felt like a remote possibility suddenly becomes a tragedy. That’s why early warnings matter. As flood risk grows, resilience depends not only on understanding the national trend, but on seeing and responding to local danger soon enough to help save lives.

#Texas is one of the most experienced states in the country for managing #floodrisk. And yet, in 2025, a devastating series of #floods resulted in significant loss of life and property. If it can happen in Texas, it can happen anywhere. In fact, the patterns we've observed in Texas mirror those we've seen across recent disasters—from Hawaii to the East Coast. In this post, we break down those common failure points and outline strategies to address them. https://lnkd.in/gFmVVnwN
