When treating children with septic shock, every decision matters—including the choice of resuscitation fluids. A major international study published in the NEJM Group examined whether balanced fluids - designed to more closely resemble electrolyte composition of blood plasma - lead to better outcomes than standard saline. Waleed Alqurashi and Fuad A. led study participation at CHEO, the site with the second-largest enrollment in Canada. The primary outcomes measured - including death, kidney replacement therapy, or ongoing kidney dysfunction - occurred in 3.4% of children receiving balanced fluid and 3.0% receiving saline. This means neither fluid showed a clear advantage in preventing serious kidney injury or death. For care teams, this evidence helps inform critical decisions at the bedside, supporting consistent, high‑quality care grounded in data. This study also highlights the CHEO Research Institute’s contribution to large‑scale clinical trials that are shaping pediatric emergency care—locally and globally. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/euvN5hJp Jason Berman #CHEOResearch #PediatricResearch #EmergencyMedicine

As more children are identified with autism, access to early support is more important than ever. Programs like Social ABCs help caregivers build their child’s communication and social skills - but reaching more families, earlier, remains a challenge. A new CHEO Research Institute study led by Renée Baysarowich and Jessica Remedios, M.Ads, BCBA explored whether a new training pathway for clinicians could improve access to the Social ABCs program. The result? CHEO nearly doubled the number of children and families participating in Social ABCs – while maintaining the same strong outcomes in children’s communication and social development. The research team is leading a scalable approach to early autism support by investing in training and expanding capacity to reach more families sooner. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eXYyCg5e Jason Berman, Nick Denomey, MPH, M.Ed., Justyna Litwinska, Taylor Johansen, MHA, Sage Journals, International Society for Autism Research, INSAR #CHEOResearch #SocialABCs #AutismSupport

Konain Qurban, Founder and CEO of Axon Health, had a clear understanding of the problem he wanted to solve in addiction aftercare. What stood in the way was a familiar challenge for many early‑stage health‑tech founders: navigating a complex system, validating the solution with real‑world users, and finding a path to market in a highly regulated space. That’s where the CHEO Research Institute’s Core Innovation program made the difference. Through the Invention Studio Session, Konain gained structured guidance, expert mentorship, helping him sharpen his value proposition, strengthen his messaging, and turn an idea into a solution that meets real clinical and operational needs. The result is a technology now delivering measurable impact for aftercare teams and the people they support in recovery. 👉We currently have nine companies going through our Invention Studio Session - You can read Konain's full story and learn how Core Innovation is helping early-stage companies from idea to impact: https://lnkd.in/ezBqH3kU Dr. Matthew Bromwich, Ashleigh Kennedy, Jim Bottomley, Jon Chatburn

What do 670,000 concussion injuries in Ontario tell us about who receives care – and who gets left behind? New research from CHEO Research Institute senior scientist Roger Zemek and the TRANSCENDENT Concussion Research Program found socioeconomic factors play a big role in the concussion care kids and families receive. The findings highlight gaps for: 💛 children and families experiencing greater social and economic marginalization 🏡 those living in rural communities 🩺 those without access to a primary care provider When primary care and follow‑up supports are limited, families rely on the options available to them. That can often mean turning to emergency departments, where care is focused on acute needs rather than ongoing concussion management or follow‑up. The research suggests strengthening access to primary care, expanding alternative pathways like virtual care, and improving concussion support in emergency departments can help ensure children and families get the treatment and follow-up care they need. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/e7KfcemJ Jason Berman, Wenshan Li, Chantal Backman RN MHA PhD, Monica Lamoureux, Steven Hawken, Sharon Johnston, ICES, JAMA Network Open #CHEOResearch #Concussion #Healthequity
