How can Europe balance the demand of digital infrastructure needed for AI and cloud and remaining committed to its energy transition objectives? This question will be addressed on 9 June 2026, from 16:30 to 18:00 CEST, at European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) 2026 during Information Technology Industry Council (ITI) and EUDCA's co-hosted policy session “Marrying EU AI and cloud ambitions with the energy transition: scaling digital infrastructure sustainably”. The session explores the challenges Europe’s data centre industry faces as they navigate the increased demand for AI infrastructure within the wider context of energy transition and decarbonisation objectives. Speakers include: 🎤 Manuel Mateo Goyet, Acting Head of Unit, Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology, European Commission 🎤 Nikolaos Kontinakis, Team Leader, Directorate-General for Energy, European Commission 🎤 Paul Viktor Papenbrock, Deputy Head of Unit IIB4, Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, Germany 🎤 Cillian O'Donoghue, Policy Director, Eurelectric 🎤 Moderated by Claudie Moreau, EU tech journalist, Euractiv More information and registration here: https://lnkd.in/eXPHmbGP #EUSEW2026 #DataCentres #EnergyTransition

The European Data Centre Association - EUDCA reposted this
The European Commission is rushing to set Minimum Performance Standards (MPS) for #DataCentres. 💻⚡ The problem? The rating scheme to measure them has not even been finalised yet. 🤦♂️ Worse, these standards appear to rely on a tiny sample size, undermining predictability for large-scale, multi-year #AI and digital infrastructure investments. In a joint statement to the Commission, #CCIAeurope and other trade associations are calling for a pause on MPS development until policymakers can consult a broader range of operators across different data centre configurations. We fully support the resource-efficiency goals of the #EnergyEfficiencyDirective. 🌍 But effective #sustainability policy must be built on robust, representative data – not rushed estimates. ❌ Do not rush standards: launching MPS before completing at least one full #EED reporting cycle risks setting arbitrary thresholds. 📉 Fix the methodology: a compressed timeline and narrow sample pool cannot capture the complexity of Europe’s #DataCentre ecosystem. ⏳ Hit the pause button: policymakers need operational data from the real market before creating rigid compliance caps. 📄 Read the joint industry statement: https://lnkd.in/et73ctVa eco – Association of the Internet Industry The European Data Centre Association - EUDCA Information Technology Industry Council (ITI) #digitalEU #EnergyEfficiency #EUdigital #GreenDeal

As Europe’s digital infrastructure continues to support the EU’s ambitions in energy efficiency and sustainability, effective regulation must be grounded through strong evidence, realistic implementation timelines, and crucial industry engagement. That is where the EUDCA comes in! Alongside Information Technology Industry Council (ITI), Computer & Communications Industry Association, and eco – Association of the Internet Industry we want to share our joint statement calling for a more measured and evidence-based approach to the development of Minimum Performance Standards (MPSs) for data centres under the Energy Efficient Directive (EED). Work on MPSs is progressing before sufficient EED data is available, with the EU data centre rating scheme being finalised, and full consultation completed across the European market. As critical infrastructure sustaining Europe’s digital economy, data centres need regulation that is technically validated and reflective of operational realities across Europe. The sector’s concern is about ensuring the right process and that’s why we call for MPS development to be grounded in data, industry consultation, and technical validation. See the joint statement below:
