Today marks #HealthDay at COP30 Brazil, a pivotal moment for climate and health. ASPHER’s Climate & Health Task Force is present on the ground, represented by Balazs Adam, ensuring that the voice of public health education is heard where global decisions are made. At the same time, The Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region - ASPHER is actively engaged at the EUPHA - European Public Health Association EPH Conference in Helsinki, dedicated this year to sustainable health and wellbeing. This unique alignment underscores the growing recognition that health must stand at the centre of climate action: locally, regionally, and globally. In the lead-up to COP30, ASPHER has published its position paper: “Educate, Commit, Act: ASPHER’s Response to the Climate–Health Crisis at COP30” In this paper, we call for a sharper #mandate for COP30 and present seven essential commitments to advance #climateandhealth action across #policy, #education, systems strengthening, equity, research, and accountability. ASPHER continues to work continuously to strengthen climate change, One Health, Planetary Health, and environmental-health education across the European Region. These efforts are made possible through strong collaboration with our valued partners: European Environment Agency, WHO Regional Office for Europe, EUPHA, Lancet Countdown Europe, APHEA, and many others. 🌍 ASPHER at the Planetary Health Alliance Meeting 2025 🏥 This week, The Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region - ASPHER participated in the Planetary Health Alliance Meeting (#PHAM2025) in Rotterdam, held at the De Doelen Conference Centre, as a proud sponsor and partner organisation. ASPHER was represented by our Senior Lead in Climate and Health, Laurent Chambaud, and our Fellow in Climate and Health, Eric P. Twomey, who led a dedicated session on #PlanetaryHealthEducation. Their contribution helped initiate discussions towards establishing a European #Community on Planetary Health Education, in collaboration with speakers and educators from academia, national health institutes, and the World Health Organization. We were also pleased to see several members of ASPHER’s Working Group on #ClimateChangeandHealth actively involved in the programme: Chiara Cadeddu served as a member of the PHAM Steering Committee and as this year’s conference host; Farhang Tahzib moderated a session on Planetary Health, #PeaceandSecurity; and David Patterson delivered an impulse presentation on #climatelitigation and the potential for a United Nations General Assembly special session on climate change and health. ASPHER welcomes the growing engagement of academia, public health agencies, and society in advancing #PlanetaryHealth. We look forward to strengthening collaboration across these domains and supporting the integration of Planetary Health into #publichealth education and practice throughout Europe. We vigorously oppose ALL hate-based violence and methods. As public health professionals, we are committed to the health of populations through health protection, disease prevention and health promotion. We call for an immediate cessation of violence, for serious engagement by relevant parties in dialogue as the only way to eventually solve territorial battles. 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐫. 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬. 𝐋𝐞𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧. Our humanitarian and public health responsibility is for all people in the region. This humanitarian crisis and situation in unacceptable. It goes against everything we stand for and aspire to as public health educators and practitioners. There is no public health without peace. ASPHER stands ready to support recovery efforts, promote solidarity between regional health institutions, and champion the role of public health in building lasting peace – in the Middle East as well as in other war-torn regions.
