Today we have announced a new multi-year distribution agreement with Sky News Australia to continue broadcasting free-to-air channel Sky News Regional in existing regional markets across New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland. In addition, our Network 10 sales team will commercially represent all advertising inventory for this regional free-to-air channel. Tomorrow marks the start of Australia’s new TV prominence framework, making it easier for Australians to find local free-to-air TV services in an increasingly competitive digital media environment. Under the new rules, all new smart TVs, streaming sticks and similar devices sold in Australia must meet minimum prominence requirements. This means devices must come with ABC iview, SBS On Demand, 7plus, 9Now and 10 pre-installed and prominently displayed on the home screen. Manufacturers must not supply devices that fail to meet these requirements. The ACMA will monitor compliance and has launched a complaint form for reporting suspected non-compliance. If you are a small retail business you may be feeling that innovation has become synonymous with technology and, more worryingly, that technology driven innovation has become the domain of big retail businesses. Big retailers are making massive investments in technology hoping to innovate customer experience and reduce costs. Small retail businesses may feel that access to capital and therefore to technology is giving big retailers an innovation advantage. When OzTAM Pty Ltd announced in June its new Streamscape “unified total video measurement” report would finally give the market an independent picture of the fast fragmenting TV and streaming sector, it supported what broadcasters had been trying to tell TV naysayers for a year – TV ad revenues might be running but audiences were not and that linear, free-to-air (FTA) viewing had stabilised. Streamscape’s first report for the March quarter showed FTA viewing clocked 61.5 per cent of total  time on the big TV screen, BVOD, covering the commercial networks, the ABC and SBS, was at 8.4 per cent and digital video, capturing all the streaming platforms, was taking 30.1 per cent share of total TV screen time. But six weeks on Samsung, which has a global ad-supported content business with 3.6 million connected TV sets in Australia that it tracks for household viewing, released its own numbers which all but entirely flips OzTam’s Streamscape figures. The Australian Retailers Association (ARA) and the National Retail Association support the focus of the Albanese Government on productivity in its second term. Every Australian has a vested interest in supporting the competitiveness of Australian businesses by lifting productivity. It is essential if living standards are to rise. It’s also essential if we are to protect and grow jobs. That’s especially relevant for the retail sector because it employs more than 1.4 million Australians, making it the single largest private sector employer in the nation. In retail, competition has never been so fierce: - Disruptive, ultra-low cost operators are growing at pace but operating outside so many of the laws and regulations placed on Australian retailers - Supply chains continue to be disrupted, whether by natural disaster or in the form of Trump’s disastrous tariff war - Energy costs are on the rise - The adoption of AI and other technology applications is taking off In the face of this disruption, Australia’s inclination has been to add regulation, not repeal it. We must retreat because this mountain of regulation comes with a cost. Governments see it in flagging economic performance. Retailers see it in the ever-rising cost of doing business. Workers see it in decreased job opportunities. Regrettably, Australians see the cost at the checkout. This need not be an ideological debate. It needs to be a discussion grounded in common sense. Further, it requires a multi-year commitment, especially on the part of Australian regulators, which need to set a 2030 reduction target and stay the course.
