Unexpected solutions. Here's the secret most managers never learn: Tasks create order takers. Goals create problem solvers. And the difference compounds over time. Order takers wait for the next direction. Problem solvers build the next system. Order takers need supervision. Problem solvers need guidance. Order takers fill a role. Problem solvers grow beyond it. Here's how to make the shift: Instead of: "Here are the steps to follow." Try: "How would you go about getting [x] outcome?" Instead of: "This is how I'd do it." Yet, as the MTI rightly flags, this growth is impacted by external shocks—prolonged Middle East conflicts disrupting the Strait of Hormuz, rising supply chain inflation, and looming US tariff investigations. This is why a "one-size-fits-all" strategy is dead: 1. The SEA Paradox: Dual-Speed Tech Adoption We are looking at a highly fragmented, dual-speed economy in SEA. The focus is shifting from "training models" to "deploying localized, domain-specific AI" that delivers immediate ROI in resilient sectors like banking, fund management, and advanced manufacturing. 3. Cultural & Regional Nuances: De-risking the Supply Chain With petrochemicals and transport segments taking hits due to global energy spikes, SEA enterprises are hyper-focused on resilience. Culturally, SEA business ecosystems value long-term stability and risk mitigation over aggressive, unproven leaps. Key change: ∙ From April 6th, businesses bidding for NHS Supply Chain or medicine contracts must achieve Level 1 on the Evergreen Sustainable Supplier Assessment before tenders close, or their bid won't qualify. To meet Level 1, businesses need: ∙ A published Carbon Reduction Plan ∙ Measurement of Scope 1, 2, and some Scope 3 ∙ A public Net Zero commitment approved by leadership ∙ Relevant modern slavery compliance The changes are particularly significant for SMEs and supply chains. Smaller businesses may face increased pressure to measure and report carbon emissions, often with limited internal resources or expertise to know how to respond. However, larger companies are increasingly asking suppliers for sustainability data, meaning SMEs that prepare early are likely to be more competitive and better positioned for future contracts. Requirements will continue to tighten, with stronger reporting expectations from 2027, product-level carbon data from 2028, and sustainability performance influencing NHS contract awards by 2030.
