Western Australia opens $9m Clean Energy Future Fund round to accelerate decarbonisation A total of $9m is available in Round 4 of the Clean Energy Future Fund (CEFF) with individual grants ranging from $100,000 to $4m. The CEFF supports innovative projects that test and demonstrate new clean energy technologies in Western Australia and enable wider adoption. I was quoted in today’s NZ Herald market close covering results from Meridian Energy and EBOS Group Limited Meridian delivered a clean rebound. Improved generation conditions and stronger margins flowed through to earnings, reinforcing the operating leverage inherent in the model when hydrology and wind cooperate. EBOS, however, was more mixed. While the defensive nature of the healthcare distribution model remains intact, parts of the result highlighted margin pressures and a more nuanced trading environment. Speaking at the CEDA - Committee for Economic Development of Australia Energy Security NSW event yesterday, I outlined what the next phase of the transition now demands. The fundamentals are shifting faster than expected. NSW operational demand is now forecast to exceed 85 TWh by 2035, materially higher than projected just a year ago. Coal exits are scheduled. New build is increasingly solar-heavy. That materially lifts the requirement for storage, particularly longer-duration firming. Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO)’s latest outlook suggests NSW will require around 56 GWh of storage operational by 2030. Only about a quarter has reached financial close. The policy architecture is in place, transmission planning, revenue underwriting and capital support. The constraint now is execution. Projects must reach final investment decision and move into construction. For investors, domestic and international, pace will depend on predictable revenue settings, credible grid timelines, accelerated approvals and disciplined risk allocation. At the Energy Security Corporation, our focus is on helping projects move earlier in the development cycle, supporting long-lead procurement and structuring capital to crowd private investment in. Ultimately, energy security will be determined by projects reaching FID and entering construction.
