This is an article I did for University World News after attending last week's UNESCAP Forum on SDGs in Asia Pacific. I focused on a so-called "side event" that was included in the main program of the conference, where Asian universities demonstrated their AI expertise that are driving the SDG process which is largely faltering across the region except for China that has already achieved 9 of the 15 goals. The session reflected how Asian universities are driving the process and the Westerners - who usually like to come to Asia to lecture, often attracting lucrative consultancy fees (either from Asian agencies/government or from so-called "aid" budgets of the EU and other western funding agencies) - they were missing in action here. https://lnkd.in/g-P6g7Ui

Call for Papers! The ADM+S Generative Authenticity project is hosting a small symposium on Authenticity, Generative AI and Synthetic Media. It will take place on 6-7 May in Brisbane at QUT Kelvin Grove, and online. We are now calling for short abstracts, with a deadline of 9 March. We will then be asking for short draft papers to be circulated among presenters, and will assign discussants to panels. it's going to be a bit scholarly, a bit sparkly, very collegial and, hopefully...generative. We're keen to explore how the problem of authenticity shows up and might be managed in synthetic media contexts including audio and screen media, internet culture, music, and AI-powered voice agents or chatbots. We welcome interdisciplinary, methodological, empirical, and conceptual work addressing the social and technical dimensions of these problems. We are particularly keen to see work that engages directly with voice automation, either as a standalone topic or in the context of audiovisual and/or synthetic media more broadly. Apply! The Visiting Fellowships at Social Sciences and Humanities Advanced Research Centre (SSSHARC) - University of Sydney are an excellent launching pad for innovative research and fostering big ideas. Mine includes delivering the Skate, Create, Educate and Regenerate (SkateCER) https://lnkd.in/gv9T7BMj initiative, with the first collaboration with USYD public artists (Art/Play/Risk) in 2024. Since my SSSHARC James Social Science Visiting Fellowship in 2024, I have had 2 follow-on Fellowships transferring insights from skateboarding studies into public programs (2024-2025 NSW Winston Churchill Trust (Australia) and 2025-2026 Hon. JOL State Library of Queensland). The mentoring at SSSHARC also includes applying for a DECRA (results later in the year), learning from leaders in Social Enterprises, the HISS cohort, and has also been foundational to the currently developing global research I am working on with an Advanced Olympic Research Grant from the IOC (2025 - 2027). Last year included a visit to The Olympic Studies Centre in Lausanne, Switzerland with research partner Skateistan - one of the leading non-profits in the skateboarding for social good sector. This year is dedicated to exploring the work of skateboarders from Bali to Brazil and more. Thank you Prof. Lee Wallace Dr Aisha Malik Dr Izabella Nantsou and SSSHARC for seeing the potential in my sociological research topic of skateboarding and its social impact.

I'm looking forward to some good kōrero (discussion) in the context of HR in Aotearoa (New Zealand) and global implications. At #INHSU2025, Professor Carla Treloar AM Treloar and Dr Theresa Caruana led a powerful workshop exploring how stigma shows up across health and harm reduction settings, and how it can affect workers too — including peer workers. As Theresa shared, “stigma by association” means that people who work with stigmatised communities often face discrimination themselves. Yet, peer workers with lived experience often show higher job satisfaction and a deeper understanding of these dynamics. Listening to them is crucial if we want to design meaningful strategies for change. The workshop brought together diverse voices to unpack these ideas, share experiences, and reflect on how we can collectively tackle stigma in our own settings. However, councils face increasing challenges with a “broken” funding model that constrains their ability to meet public health responsibilities. Without greater central government support or new funding mechanisms, critical infrastructure and services will continue to lag behind need.
