Hunter Writers’ Centre is pleased to announce the longlist for the 2025 Grieve Project, an annual program supporting community storytelling around grief and loss. Longlisted works will be featured in an online multimedia gallery and published in the 2025 Grieve Anthology, to be launched on Wednesday 29 October at the culminating storytelling event Lament, where the 2025 prize winners will be announced. Now in its 12th year, Grieve inspires Australians around the country to articulate emotions and experiences of grief. Submitted works include prose, poetry, and multimedia formats such as film, audio, graphic storytelling, and visual imagery. This year’s curators are Lamisse Hamouda and David Stavanger, with Paris Rosemont as Associate Curator, who leant heart, humanity and insight into the selection process. ‘Reading and experiencing the works submitted to the Grieve Project is both humbling and deeply moving,’ says Katherine McLean, Director of Hunter Writers’ Centre. ‘In Australian culture, grief is often brushed aside and left unspoken. The Grieve Project reminds us that grief and loss are shared human experiences, ones that can and should be expressed. Since it began in 2013, the Grieve Project has struck a chord in our community, inspiring people, whether they see themselves as writers or not, to articulate the ineffable and give form to the complex emotions of loss.’ ‘At NALAG, we believe that grief is not a weakness to be hidden, but a profound expression of love, loss, and the human spirit,’ adds Trudy Hanson OAM, NALAG committee member. ‘The Grieve competition offers a powerful space for voices to be heard, stories to be shared, and healing to begin. We are honoured to support this celebration of courage, creativity, and connection.’ Grieve is supported by principal partner the National Association of Loss and Grief (NALAG), sponsoring the $1,500 first prize and a $500 multimedia award. Other prizes range from $100 to $1,000, including awards sponsored by your choice funerals, Pettigrew Family Funerals, All About Grief, Lake Macquarie Memorial Park, Newcastle Memorial Park, and EveryMind. Six In Memoriam awards have also been offered by community members as memorials to lost loved ones. All award winners will be announced at Lament, an online and in-person communal gathering held at the end of October, where the stories from the Grieve Project are showcased and shared. What changes have you made based on their feedback? How do you measure whether people are achieving what matters to them? Generic claims about quality care don't differentiate you. Specific evidence of participant outcomes and genuine co-design does. Your participant success stories (with proper permissions and privacy protections) are worth more than pages of methodology description. Apunipima’s Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS) team is gaining national attention for a powerful and culturally grounded campaign that’s inspiring communities across Australia – and even reaching audiences overseas. At the recent National TIS Workshop in Darwin, the team unveiled their innovative music video project, developed in collaboration with Grand Trine Productions. These vibrant videos feature local children rapping and singing about growing up strong, healthy, and proud on Country. Each song delivers a clear anti-smoking message while celebrating Indigenous identity and resilience. The music is resonating deeply – with communities singing along to choruses from other regions, showing how far the message is spreading. In addition to the music videos, the team presented their Smoke-Free Workplace Toolkit at the Lowitja International Indigenous Health and Wellbeing Conference. Discussions included ideas like partnering with local stores to limit tobacco supply and creating smoke-free spaces to protect community wellbeing. Bringing a legacy disability brand into a new era. Endeavour Foundation has been a long-term partner of New Word Order, so when they asked for support refreshing their brand to better connect with their evolving audience, we got to work. With younger people with disability wanting independence, action and real opportunities, Endeavour needed to modernise without losing the trust of its loyal community. Our task was clear: to evolve a legacy brand for a new generation. The result? A more youthful, vibrant brand connection. A contemporary repositioning in a crowded sector. Bus Stop Films' PLACES 2026 Advanced Filmmaking Program for people with disability launches at AFTRS! Bus Stop Films' specialised peer-led filmmaking program moves to Australian Film, Television, and Radio School Moore Park campus, with new Saturday morning workshops from February next year. PLACES, Bus Stop Films' advanced Accessible Filmmaking Program for people with disability, will move from its previous Southern Sydney location at ShopFront Arts Co-Op to AFTRS' state-of-the-art facilities in Moore Park. In 2026 the PLACES Program will run on Saturday mornings, making the program more accessible to participants who may have weekday commitments. The 20-week program includes workshops, community excursions, and the collaborative creation of a short film, with participants learning specialised skills across three streams: Screenwriting, Directing or Camera & Lighting. 💡 The History Council of Victoria has submitted a joint statement to the Australian Federal Government to help shape our next National Cultural Policy—the successor to 'Revive: A place for every story, a story for every place', which has guided arts and cultural policy since 2023. The joint statement comes from the History Council of Victoria, History Council of South Australia, History Council of Western Australia, and the History Council of New South Wales, Inc, peak bodies for history representing collecting and heritage bodies, history teachers, academic and professional historians, and local, Indigenous, and specialist history organisations. The submission emphasises the contribution of historians to cultural life in collecting, documenting, preserving and making available resources that encourage and cherish the process of history making; and also advocates for the importance of fostering historical literacy. "Knowledge of Australian and other histories is central to a vigorous democratic culture and social cohesion, which relies upon a critical and inclusive understanding of the past. Historical literacy emphasises cultural understanding, holistic explanations, careful judgement, and flexibility of outlook.
