✈️ We've released the Australian Aviation Network Overview Report for February 2025. Highlights include: ➡️ In February 2025, the Australian aviation network recorded a near five percent increase in average daily flights compared to the previous month, driven by strong domestic demand. After consolidating from the holiday peak, year-on-year international traffic growth remained positive. ➡️ The overall industry operational reliability continues to improve in terms of on-time performance and first wave punctuality. This reflects the aviation sector’s collective efforts over the last three months, such as strengthening network governance, adding aircraft to meet surge demand and providing standby resources for disruption management. ➡️ In February, we saw an increase in ground delay attribution to Airservices. This was driven largely by staffing impacts at Sydney tower on 14 February during a weather event, and in the airspace volume in northern New South Wales in the latter half of the month. We understand the impact this has on our customers and we have focussed efforts to improve our management and notification processes to provide advice as early as possible to minimise impacts. ➡️ We are taking all necessary measures to strengthen our service resilience and response capability to unexpected disruptions. Currently, we are undertaking the largest recruitment and training program in Airservices’ history. Following the endorsement of 52 new air traffic controllers last year, we expect another 85 controllers to enter service this year. Our workforce resilience program is also a key priority to enable reliable and flexible resource utilisation through reforming our systems and processes. ➡️ During this reporting period some significant events occurred impacting the airspace and industry. Airservices coordinated with government and industry stakeholders a response to the Chinese warship exercises in international waters between Australia and New Zealand. More recently, in preparation for Tropical Cyclone Alfred, our industry has again proven resilient and collaborative in times of crisis, ensuring the effective management of the event and resumption of normal operations. Jet flights return to the Christchurch – Hamilton route for the first time in 25 years. From 18 September, Air New Zealand will introduce a year-round domestic jet service between Ōtautahi, Christchurch and Hamilton Airport NZ, operated by a 171-seat Airbus A320. This service will operate 5x a week (Mon, Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sun) and add ~11,000 seats for summer – a 14% capacity increase. Airservices Australia is expanding a trial of cross-boundary user-preferred routing (UPR) following a successful 11-month first phase. The trial, which initially included 38 routes between Australian/New Zealand and Indonesian/Singaporean airspace, will be extended to include the national air navigation service providers (ANSPs) of Papua New Guinea and Fiji, as well as three additional airlines. #aviation #aerospace https://bit.ly/4lKT7Qz

World class baggage handling landing at Melbourne Airport! As reported on Nine News last night, testing is underway on our new hi-tech international baggage system, which will more than double our current capacity and support faster, more reliable baggage handling for airlines and passengers. The new system will: - Process more than 4,000 bags per hour - Move bags through more than 3.6km of new baggage lines - Store up to 1,400 bags until the aircraft is ready to depart - Use 3D CT and X-ray screening to strengthen security - Automatically sort bags so they are loaded in the right order This will mean fewer lost bags, the ability to check in earlier, better on-time performance and a smoother experience for passengers. Digital declarations now landing in Sydney! 🛬 The Australia Travel Declaration pilot program has expanded to Sydney Airport, offering a digital alternative to the paper Incoming Passenger Card for eligible Qantas flights from New Zealand. Led by the Australian Border Force, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and Qantas, this initiative simplifies the arrival process—enhancing border efficiency and improving the passenger experience. Travellers on QF144 from Auckland and QF122 from Queenstown can now complete their declaration via the Qantas app before departure. Upon completion, they receive a digital pass with a QR code for processing at the border. 📱 Since launching in Brisbane, more than 70,000 passengers have embraced the digital declaration—saving time and reducing paper use. Reminder: Biosecurity screening remains unchanged. Travellers must still declare any food, plant material, or animal products. 🔍 Want a smoother experience at the border? For the first time, Qantas is giving members of its frequent flyer program the chance to build up their status credits balance on the ground to attain higher tiers and more benefits. In a move predicted to delight some members and irritate others, frequent flyers can earn up to 110 status credits by using their Qantas-linked credit card, shopping with program partners or booking a hotel stay.
