Payments in Australia are undergoing significant shifts across licensing, the vision for account-to-account (A2A), scam liability frameworks and — with today’s RBA Merchant Card Payment Costs and Surcharging Conclusions Paper release — surcharging. The debate around surcharging is an important one. For consumers, it feels like a penalty for paying the way modern life requires. For many merchants, it’s a blunt tool to recover a cost they can’t easily control. The Reserve Bank’s paper confirms that surcharging on both debit and credit cards will end on 01 October this year, alongside lowering interchange fees and increasing transparency. Surcharging has always been a symptom of the underlying cost of card payments — not the cause. Removing it does not eliminate that cost. It simply moves it. In practice, businesses will absorb it or build it into their prices. Zepto supports reforms that improve transparency and reduce friction for consumers. A highlight for us at this week's Beyond Tomorrow summit was the fireside chat between Zepto Co-founder and CPO, Trevor Wistaff, and Employment Hero's General Manager, Product - Payments, Benefits & Super, Rob Dunn. 🔥 By the crackling fire with marshmallows in hand, Rob and Trev discussed how, with the infrastructure now in place, Australia has the rails to fundamentally transform how money moves, and how payroll and business payments work. But, as they pointed out, infrastructure alone doesn’t deliver transformation. Transformation happens when platforms, payment providers, banks and regulators work together to embed these capabilities into real-world workflows. And this is central to a shared vision of the future where, they posited, that businesses won’t “make payments". Payments will happen automatically, seamlessly, and securely — embedded directly into the platforms they already use. We’re still early in that journey, but momentum is building.
